Whirlpool Water Heaters: full buyer's guide
Whirlpool water heaters aren\'t actually made by Whirlpool. They\'re manufactured by AO Smith under a brand licensing arrangement that lets AO Smith sell the same product under three different badges at Lowe\'s — State, AO Smith Signature, and Whirlpool — each at slightly different price points and warranty tiers. The Whirlpool name is the budget cross-shop: homeowners who recognize the Whirlpool appliance brand from washers, dryers, and refrigerators reach for the familiar name without realizing it\'s the same AO Smith manufacturing as the other two brands at the same store.
The Whirlpool water heater lineup
Four product families cover the catalog:
- Standard Atmospheric Gas (NU series) — base 6-year warranty tier. 30-gal (NU30T122-403), 40-gal (NU40T122-403), 50-gal (NU50T122-403), 65-gal (NU65T122-403), 75-gal (NU75T122-403).
- Energy Smart 9-Year Warranty (NU161 / EU161) — high-efficiency variants with extended warranty. Energy Smart 40-gal gas, Energy Smart 50-gal gas, Energy Smart 40-gal electric, Energy Smart 50-gal electric. 9-year tank warranty matches Rheem Performance Plus and AO Smith Signature Select.
- Power Vent (NU-PWVT) — atmospheric burner with fan-assisted PVC sidewall venting. 40-gal, 50-gal, 75-gal. For chimneyless homes. Plus Direct Vent 40-gal sealed combustion variant.
- Standard Electric (EU series) — base 6-year electric tanks. 30-gal, 40-gal, 50-gal, 66-gal, 80-gal.
- Hybrid Heat Pump (UE6T-H) — older heat pump line, predecessor of current AO Smith Voltex and State Premier Hybrid. 50-gal, 66-gal. Limited US retail availability; Lowe\'s sometimes discounts. IRA tax credit eligible.
Whirlpool, State, AO Smith — who makes what?
This is the question that confuses every Lowe\'s water heater shopper. Quick answer: all three brands are manufactured by AO Smith. They differ in:

Energy Smart — Whirlpool\'s warranty answer
The biggest practical reason to choose Whirlpool over State at Lowe\'s: the Energy Smart variants get a 9-year tank warranty at typically lower price than equivalent State or AO Smith Signature Select. Energy Smart is Whirlpool\'s only major differentiator vs the sister brands:
- Improved insulation reduces standby loss
- 0.65 UEF vs 0.62 standard Whirlpool / State / Signature
- 9-year tank warranty matches Signature Select
- Typical price: $899-1,099 for 50-gal gas (vs $849-1,049 Signature Select)
For warranty-priority Lowe\'s shoppers who recognize the Whirlpool name, Energy Smart is the value play.
Why does the Whirlpool brand exist?
AO Smith has multiple brand badges for a strategic reason: brand recognition. Many homeowners replacing a water heater don\'t research brands deeply — they walk into Lowe\'s and gravitate toward whatever brand name they recognize from elsewhere in their home. Whirlpool is the dominant appliance brand for laundry and refrigeration; many homes have a Whirlpool washing machine + Whirlpool dryer + Whirlpool refrigerator. When that homeowner sees Whirlpool on a water heater, they pick it without comparison.
This isn\'t deceptive — Whirlpool licenses its name to AO Smith for water heaters specifically because Whirlpool (the appliance company) doesn\'t make water heaters and has no intent to. The arrangement gives AO Smith a third Lowe\'s brand badge, and Whirlpool gets licensing royalties. The product itself is identical to the State and AO Smith Signature equivalents at the same store.
Which Whirlpool is right?
- Standard atmospheric gas (NU122) if you have a chimney and want lowest upfront cost. 6-year warranty
- Energy Smart (NU161 / EU161) if you want longer warranty + higher efficiency at modest premium
- Power Vent (NU-PWVT) if no chimney available; sidewall venting required
- Direct Vent if sealed-envelope new construction or code requires sealed combustion
- Standard electric (EU122) for all-electric homes with adequate panel capacity
- Hybrid Heat Pump (UE6T-H) if Lowe\'s has a discounted unit AND you qualify for IRA tax credit — but consider AO Smith Voltex or State Premier Hybrid for newer-platform heat pump
Error codes — same as State
Whirlpool gas units use the same LED flash code system as State and AO Smith Signature (same gas valve hardware). See our State error codes hub for the complete reference — the codes translate directly to Whirlpool units:
- 1 flash steady = normal operation
- 2 flashes = thermopile / pilot voltage low (replace thermocouple)
- 4 flashes = high-temp lockout (check ECO reset, sediment)
- 5 flashes = vacuum / draft (chimney inspection)
- 7 flashes = gas valve fault (dealer replacement)
- 8 flashes = combustion air / intake blocked (clean intake screen)
Electric Whirlpool units use the same ECO red button reset as State and AO Smith Signature.
Whirlpool warranty
| Product | Tank | Parts | Labor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard atmospheric gas (NU122) | 6 years | 6 years | 1 year |
| Energy Smart (NU161 / EU161) | 9 years | 9 years | 1 year |
| Power Vent (NU-PWVT) | 6 years | 6 years | 1 year |
| Direct Vent | 6 years | 6 years | 1 year |
| Standard electric (EU122) | 6 years | 6 years | 1 year |
| Hybrid Heat Pump (UE6T-H) | 10 years | 10 years | 1 year |
Whirlpool Energy Smart 9-year warranty is the brand\'s strongest selling point. Hybrid Heat Pump 10-year matches AO Smith Voltex and State Premier Hybrid. See Whirlpool warranty hub.
How old is my Whirlpool?
Whirlpool serial numbers use AO Smith\'s encoding scheme — same as State and AO Smith Signature. First 4 characters = year + week. See our Whirlpool age lookup guide.
Parts directory
Whirlpool parts interchange with State and AO Smith Signature parts in most cases (same manufacturing). Available at Lowe\'s, Amazon, and AO Smith distribution:
- Anode rod — protects the tank; replace every 4-7 years
- Heating element — electric tanks
- Thermostat — upper and lower electric thermostats
- Gas valve — integrated gas control with LED indicator
- Thermocouple — standing pilot gas units
- Dip tube — broken dip tube = hot water runs out fast
Install requirements
Whirlpool install requirements are identical to State and AO Smith Signature equivalents:
- Atmospheric gas: existing B-vent chimney with proper draft
- Power Vent: 120V outlet within 6 ft, PVC sidewall venting
- Direct Vent: two-pipe sealed combustion venting
- Electric: 240V dedicated circuit, 30A breaker
- Hybrid heat pump: 240V circuit + 700+ cubic feet of unconditioned air space + condensate drain + ambient 40°F+ for heat pump mode
Full requirements on our Whirlpool install guide.
Maintenance
Standard tank water heater maintenance — annual T&P test, annual flush, anode rod inspection every 2-3 years. Same intervals as State and AO Smith Signature. See Whirlpool maintenance hub.
Whirlpool vs competitors
- Whirlpool vs State — both AO Smith-made Lowe\'s brands. Which to pick?
- Whirlpool vs AO Smith — same factory, different badge
- Whirlpool vs Rheem — Lowe\'s budget vs Home Depot mid-tier
- Whirlpool vs Bradford White — retail value vs plumber-channel premium
Where to buy
Whirlpool sells primarily at Lowe\'s. Some plumbing wholesalers stock select Whirlpool models via AO Smith distribution. Amazon stocks select Whirlpool tank models from authorized sellers. Home Depot doesn\'t carry Whirlpool water heaters (HD favors Rheem). See Whirlpool dealers hub.
Customer service
Whirlpool water heater customer service: 1-877-817-6750. Hours: Monday-Friday, 7 AM - 7 PM Central. Operates under AO Smith corporate (the actual manufacturer) but maintains Whirlpool-specific support staff. Hold times typically 10-20 minutes.
Owner reviews
Whirlpool reviews skew positive on value at Lowe\'s. The dominant theme: reliable AO Smith manufacturing at a lower price than equivalent AO Smith Signature, with brand recognition that some homeowners value. Energy Smart variants get particularly positive reviews because the 9-year warranty is a real upgrade vs base 6-year. See Whirlpool owner reviews.
Bottom line
Whirlpool is the AO Smith manufacturing wearing a brand badge most homeowners already recognize. For Lowe\'s shoppers who prefer the Whirlpool name over State, the product is the same — pick Energy Smart for the 9-year warranty, standard NU122 for budget priority, Power Vent for chimneyless homes. For warranty-priority buyers, AO Smith Signature Premier at the same Lowe\'s offers 12-year warranty at higher price. For tankless or premium-channel buyers, look elsewhere — Whirlpool only makes tank water heaters.
