Whirlpool 50-Gallon Electric Water Heater
Whirlpool 50-Gallon Electric Water Heater Review
The Whirlpool 50-Gallon Electric Water Heater is the electric counterpart to the Whirlpool 50-Gallon Natural Gas — sold through Lowe's as the Whirlpool-branded water heater line. Like the gas version, the actual unit is built by AO Smith with Whirlpool branding applied; functionally it is an AO Smith ProMax or Conservationist-equivalent electric tank with different paint and label.
Specs: 50 gallons stored, two 4500W heating elements (240V), UEF 0.93, 64-gallon first-hour rating, 6-year tank and 6-year parts warranty. Upper and lower elements with independent thermostats (standard residential electric design). Glass-lined steel tank, magnesium anode rod, polyurethane foam insulation.
The dual-element design is the meaningful spec versus single-element budget tanks. Both elements alternate based on demand: the upper element fires first on initial draw to ensure usable hot water at the top of the tank quickly, then the lower element takes over to refill the reservoir. This produces faster recovery and more consistent delivery during heavy demand than single-element designs.
The Whirlpool brand recognition is the primary buying motivation for many Lowe's-channel buyers — the assumption that the appliance brand carries over to water-heater quality. The assumption is approximately correct (AO Smith builds the unit), but the warranty length is below the premium tier. Rheem Performance Platinum's 12-year warranty on the equivalent unit makes it the better long-term economic choice for primary residences planning multi-decade ownership.
About $549 unit at Lowe's, $1,200 installed. Direct drop-in replacement for an existing 30A 240V electric tank with standard 1/2" or 3/4" NPT plumbing connections. Reasonable DIY for any homeowner comfortable with electrical work; otherwise $300–$500 in installer labor.
