Whirlpool Troubleshooting

Whirlpool Water Heater Troubleshooting — Symptoms, LED Codes, Fixes

Symptom-based troubleshooting for Whirlpool atmospheric, Energy Smart, Power Vent, electric, and Hybrid Heat Pump.

Updated May 2026 · Whirlpool Water Heaters

Most Whirlpool problems map to standard tank water heater symptom patterns. Gas units share AO Smith\'s LED flash code system (same hardware as State and AO Smith Signature). See error codes hub for the flash reference.

No hot water — gas units

Check the LED flash code on the gas valve first:

  1. 1 flash steady = normal but no firing; check thermostat
  2. 2 flashes = thermopile voltage low; clean intake screen, replace thermocouple
  3. 4 flashes = high-temp lockout / ECO trip
  4. 5 flashes = vacuum / draft (atmospheric) or pressure switch (power vent)
  5. 7 flashes = gas valve fault (dealer replacement)
  6. 8 flashes = combustion air switch / intake blocked (clean intake)

No hot water — electric units

(1) Check breaker; (2) press ECO reset (red button) behind upper access panel; (3) test upper element and thermostat.

Lukewarm water — electric

Lower element or thermostat failed. Upper section heats; lower stays cold.

Hot water runs out fast

Most common cause: broken dip tube. Replace dip tube — $5-15 part, 30-min DIY. Less common: heavy sediment.

Whirlpool Hybrid heat pump issues

  • Mode setting: if accidentally on "Heat Pump Only" in cold ambient, output may be inadequate. Switch to Hybrid
  • Breaker: 30A double-pole. Repeated trips indicate compressor or wiring
  • Air filter: clogged filter shuts down heat pump mode. Vacuum monthly
  • Condensate drain: full pan triggers safety shutoff
  • Resistance backup element: if compressor fails, unit defaults to resistance — slow recovery, high energy use

Water heater leaking

Top fittings: tighten or replace washers. T&P: thermal expansion (install expansion tank). Bottom of tank: shell failure — replace unit. See leaking diagnosis.

Popping or rumbling noise

Sediment buildup. Flush the tank.

Rotten egg smell

Sulfate bacteria + magnesium anode rod. Switch to aluminum-zinc anode and shock-chlorinate. See sulfur smell.

Power Vent specific

  • Fan won\'t start: 120V outlet, capacitor, motor — diagnose in that order
  • 5 flashes: draft / vacuum switch fault

Bottom line

Gas: LED flash code identifies most failures. Electric: breaker → ECO reset → element → thermostat. Hybrid: mode + air filter before suspecting compressor.
