Whirlpool 2 LED Flashes — Thermopile / Pilot Voltage Low

2 flashes = thermopile voltage low. Clean intake screen, replace thermocouple.

Updated May 2026 · Whirlpool Water Heaters

2 flashes = Thermopile voltage low. Same as State and AO Smith Signature 2-flash diagnostics.

Diagnostic sequence

1. Clean intake screen (#1 cause)

FVIR-equipped Whirlpool units have a fine mesh intake screen at the base. Clogged screen restricts combustion air, weakens pilot, drops thermopile voltage. Vacuum from below. Resolves 50% of chronic 2-flash issues.

2. Inspect pilot flame

Steady blue flame enveloping top ⅓ of thermocouple tip. Weak yellow flame = inadequate gas supply. Missing thermocouple = pilot orifice or bracket issue.

3. Clean pilot tube

Spider webs or dust restrict gas flow. Compressed air to clear (gas off).

4. Replace thermocouple

$15-25 part, 45-min DIY. See thermocouple page.

5. Verify gas pressure

Low incoming pressure prevents proper pilot. Plumber test with manometer.

Reset

  1. Address suspected cause
  2. Cycle gas valve (off → pilot → on)
  3. Hold gas button 60 seconds after pilot lights

Bottom line

Most 2-flash cases: clean intake screen + replace thermocouple. Cheap DIY fixes.
