Whirlpool Reset

How to Reset a Whirlpool Water Heater

Reset procedures for Whirlpool gas, electric, Power Vent, and Hybrid Heat Pump.

Updated May 2026 · Whirlpool Water Heaters

Whirlpool water heaters have several reset paths depending on type.

Electric — ECO reset

  1. Turn off breaker
  2. Remove upper access panel
  3. Locate red ECO button on upper thermostat
  4. Press firmly until click
  5. Replace panel, restore breaker

If ECO trips again immediately, underlying issue is active.

Gas — gas valve cycle

  1. Turn gas control knob to "Off"
  2. Wait 5 minutes
  3. Turn to "Pilot" (standing pilot) or "On" (electronic ignition)
  4. For standing pilot: depress pilot button per unit instructions
  5. Monitor LED flash code

Power Vent — combined reset

  1. Unplug 120V power to fan
  2. Cycle gas valve (off → pilot → on)
  3. Plug power back in
  4. Fan should start with heating call

Hybrid Heat Pump — multiple paths

  • Mode reset: press mode button on display panel
  • ECO reset: red button on resistance backup thermostat
  • Compressor lockout: breaker off 30 minutes, restore
  • Factory reset: hold mode + temperature for 10 seconds

Bottom line

Electric: ECO red button. Gas: valve cycle. Power Vent: power + gas cycle. Hybrid: mode → ECO → breaker → factory.
