State Water Heaters: full buyer's guide

State is AO Smith's subsidiary brand — and the brand AO Smith uses to dominate Lowe's water-heater retail. Founded in 1946 in Ashland City, Tennessee (later absorbed into the AO Smith corporate family in the 2001 State Industries acquisition), State today shares all of AO Smith's manufacturing facilities and engineering with the AO Smith Signature brand. The product is functionally identical to AO Smith Signature; the difference is distribution channel, badge, warranty terms, and price. State exists for one strategic reason: to give AO Smith a value-tier brand at Lowe's while AO Smith Signature carries the premium positioning.

The State water heater lineup

Four product families cover the catalog:

State vs AO Smith Signature — what's actually different?

If State and AO Smith Signature share manufacturing and engineering, why do both brands exist? Four real differences:

  • Distribution channel — State is Lowe's volume brand; AO Smith Signature is sold at Lowe's PLUS plumbing wholesale. State doesn't have the AO Smith Signature Select/Premier upper tiers.
  • Warranty terms — State ProLine = 6 years tank standard; AO Smith Signature Select = 9 years; AO Smith Signature Premier = 12 years. State Premier Hybrid = 10 years; AO Smith Voltex = 10 years (same).
  • Pricing — State typically prices $50-200 less than equivalent AO Smith Signature at the same Lowe's. Real savings at the entry tier; smaller gap at the heat pump tier.
  • Trim level / fit-finish — State's cabinet trim and badging are positioned as value-tier. Internal hardware is identical to AO Smith Signature equivalents.

The strategic reading: buy State for value, buy AO Smith Signature for warranty and premium-tier features. Same factories, same engineering, different positioning.

ProLine vs ProLine XE vs Power Vent — which tier?

  • Choose ProLine base if you have a chimney for atmospheric venting and want lowest upfront cost
  • Choose ProLine XE if you want better efficiency and the 8-year warranty, and you can pay $200-300 more
  • Choose Power Vent if you don't have a chimney or need to relocate the heater away from the existing flue route

Premier Hybrid — the heat pump opportunity

State's Premier Hybrid line is the value heat pump electric alternative to AO Smith Voltex (and Rheem ProTerra). Same heat pump architecture (compressor + evaporator + resistance backup), same Energy Star certification, same IRA federal tax credit eligibility. Typically $200-400 less than the equivalent Voltex at the same Lowe's.

For homes that qualify for stacked rebates (IRA $2,000 federal + HEEHRA up to $1,750 + state $500-1,500 + utility $200-1,000), Premier Hybrid 66-gal can net out at $500-1,500 — exceptional total cost vs equivalent gas tank or tankless. See our rebates and tax credits hub.

A note on naming — Patriot, Premier, ProLine

State's product naming has shifted several times. Quick decoder:

  • Select — older name for entry-tier ProLine (you'll find this on units 5-10 years old)
  • ProLine — current volume name for the entry/mid-tier line
  • ProLine XE — current high-efficiency designation
  • Premier (electric) — older name for ES6-series ProLine electric
  • Patriot Hybrid — older heat pump name (PHPT-50)
  • Premier Hybrid — current heat pump line (HPX series, current model in 2026)
  • Sandblaster — light commercial line (still current)

Why this matters: if you're shopping a State unit older than 5 years, you may see Patriot Hybrid or Select branding — same chassis as today's Premier Hybrid / ProLine. Parts and warranty look up cleanly under the model number regardless of name.

Error codes — AO Smith pattern

State gas units share AO Smith Signature's LED indicator code system. The LED on the gas valve flashes in a pattern that maps to a specific fault:

Electric State units don't have an LED code system — diagnosis is via thermostat resistance testing and ECO reset (same as AO Smith Signature electric). Full reference on our State error codes hub.

State warranty

ProLine atmospheric6 years6 years1 year
ProLine XE8 years8 years1 year
Power Vent6 years6 years1 year
Premier Hybrid10 years10 years1 year
Sandblaster commercial3 years3 years1 year

Compared to AO Smith Signature: State ProLine 6-year warranty is shorter than Signature Select (9-year) and significantly shorter than Signature Premier (12-year). For warranty-focused buyers, AO Smith Signature is the better choice. For value-focused buyers, State delivers the same product with less paper coverage. See State warranty hub.

How old is my State water heater?

State serial numbers encode the manufacture date in the first characters. AO Smith uses the same encoding scheme on Signature-brand units. See our State age lookup guide.

Parts directory

  • Anode rod — protects the tank from corrosion. Replace every 4-7 years (this is the single highest-ROI maintenance task)
  • Heating element — electric tanks only. Upper and lower elements
  • Thermostat — electric thermostat or gas control valve
  • Gas control valve — gas tanks; the LED indicator lives here
  • Thermocouple — standing-pilot gas units (older Select-era and current Sandblaster)
  • Igniter — electronic ignition gas units
  • Dip tube — broken dip tube = hot water runs out fast

Install requirements

State tank water heater installs are standard tank-to-tank swaps for like-for-like fuel and capacity:

  • Gas atmospheric: existing B-vent flue, ½" gas line (¾" for 50+ gallon)
  • Power Vent: 120V outlet within 6 ft of unit, PVC sidewall venting
  • Direct Vent (ProLine XE PDV): sealed combustion two-pipe venting
  • Electric: 240V dedicated circuit, 30A breaker
  • Heat Pump Premier Hybrid: 240V 30A circuit, 700+ cubic feet of unconditioned air space, condensate drain (4-8 gal/day), ambient 40°F+ for efficient operation

Full requirements on our State install guide.

Maintenance

State tank water heaters need standard tank maintenance: annual T&P valve test, annual flush, anode rod inspection every 2-3 years with replacement at year 4-7. See our State maintenance schedule.

State vs competitors

Where to buy

State sells primarily through Lowe's, plumbing wholesalers (Ferguson, Hajoca via AO Smith distribution), and Amazon. Home Depot doesn't stock State (Rheem dominates HD). For Premier Hybrid installs that qualify for IRA + HEEHRA rebates, work through a participating contractor — Lowe's Home Services or local plumber. See State dealers hub.

Customer service

State customer service: 1-800-365-0024. Hours: Monday-Friday, 7 AM - 7 PM Central. Support operates under AO Smith corporate. Hold times typically 10-20 minutes.

Owner reviews

State reviews skew positive on value. ProLine atmospheric gas units get good marks for reliability matching AO Smith Signature (same manufacturing). Premier Hybrid heat pump owners report strong satisfaction with the IRA-credit-stacked install math. The 6-year ProLine warranty is the most common complaint vs the longer warranty available on AO Smith Signature Premier — but this is a brand-positioning difference, not a product-quality difference. See State owner reviews.

Bottom line

For Lowe's shoppers who want AO Smith-manufactured tank water heaters at value pricing, State is the right answer. ProLine for entry/mid-tier, ProLine XE for higher efficiency + 8-year warranty, Premier Hybrid for heat pump with IRA rebates, Sandblaster for light commercial. If warranty length matters more than $100-300 in upfront savings, step up to AO Smith Signature Select or Premier at the same store.
