How We Review Water Heaters

This page explains how WaterClue selects, evaluates, and ranks water heaters. Our process is designed to produce recommendations that are accurate, independent, and useful for real purchase decisions — not recommendations optimized for affiliate commission or engagement metrics.

1. Product selection

Our catalog includes every water heater model sold through major US retail channels that meets the following criteria:

  • Currently listed as an active model by the manufacturer (not discontinued)
  • Available for purchase in the US through Amazon or a major plumbing supplier
  • Has a published manufacturer specification sheet with at minimum: tank type, fuel type, capacity (gallons or GPM), and First Hour Rating or flow rate
  • Compliant with DOE minimum UEF standards in effect for its tank type and size category

We do not accept manufacturer-submitted products. Discovery is based on independent catalog research.

2. Specification sourcing

Specifications are sourced in the following priority order:

  1. Manufacturer spec sheet — downloaded from the brand's official website or technical library. This is the most authoritative source for rated performance figures including FHR, UEF, capacity, and dimensions.
  2. AHRI Certification Directory — for energy performance data (UEF) on certified models. AHRI-certified ratings are independently tested and verified.
  3. DOE EnergyGuide label — for estimated annual energy consumption and operating cost figures.
  4. Amazon product listing — for current pricing, availability, and consumer-reported data. We use the Amazon Product Advertising API to pull live data; prices are refreshed every 6 hours.

When conflicting data exists between sources, we default to the manufacturer spec sheet or AHRI certification as the more authoritative technical source, and note the discrepancy in our editorial notes.

3. Evaluation criteria

We evaluate water heaters across five weighted dimensions:

  • Energy efficiency (30%) — Uniform Energy Factor (UEF) relative to category average. Heat pump units are compared against other heat pump units; gas tanks against gas tanks. We do not penalize tankless or heat pump units for higher upfront cost.
  • Hot water delivery (25%) — First Hour Rating for tank units; flow rate (GPM) at a 35°F temperature rise for tankless units. Higher delivery relative to the unit's size rating scores better.
  • Reliability and longevity signals (20%) — Warranty coverage (tank, parts, labor), brand reputation for service quality, and anode rod replacement accessibility. Units with 10+ year tank warranties score higher.
  • Value (15%) — Purchase price relative to efficiency and delivery performance in category. We compute an annual total-cost-of-ownership estimate using DOE methodology and US average utility rates.
  • Installation and fit (10%) — Physical dimensions, clearance requirements, power/gas requirements, and availability of installer support. A unit that cannot physically fit the majority of US residential installations in its category scores lower regardless of performance.

4. Scoring and ratings

Each dimension is scored on a 1–10 scale using the criteria above, applied consistently within subcategory (e.g., 50-gallon gas tanks are scored against other 50-gallon gas tanks, not against tankless). Dimension scores are weighted and summed to produce a composite rating on a 5-point scale.

Products with a composite rating ≥ 4.0 are eligible for "Featured" status. Featured products appear first in sorted product grids and are included in our best-of shortlists. A product cannot achieve featured status through any mechanism other than its composite score.

5. Best-of lists

Best-of lists are compiled by filtering the full catalog to the relevant subcategory and sorting by composite score. The editorial team reviews the top-scoring results to verify that no outlier issue (recent recall, widespread reported failure, discontinued status) affects a high-scoring model. We do not hand-pick best-of selections without a supporting data basis.

6. Update cadence

  • Pricing: Refreshed every 6 hours via Amazon Product Advertising API.
  • Product status (active/discontinued): Audited quarterly against manufacturer active product lists.
  • Specifications: Audited when a manufacturer announces a model revision, or during the annual category audit in Q1.
  • Composite scores: Recalculated when underlying specifications change, and during the annual Q1 audit.
  • Best-of lists and buying guides: Reviewed in full at least twice per year (Q1 and Q3).

7. What we don't do

  • We do not perform in-home physical testing. We rely on rated performance data from verified sources. We note where user-reported performance differs significantly from manufacturer-rated performance.
  • We do not accept manufacturer samples, sponsored content, or paid placement. Brands cannot pay to appear in, rank in, or be excluded from any list on this site.
  • We do not publish AI-generated product descriptions. All editorial copy is written by humans who understand the product category.
  • We do not adjust rankings based on affiliate commission rates. Amazon commission rates for water heaters are uniform within the category regardless of brand or price point.
