What is a toilet rough-in measurement?
The rough-in measurement is the distance from the finished wall behind the toilet to the center of the drainpipe (or floor bolt). Standard rough-ins are 10", 12", and 14". Most toilets sold in the US are 12" rough-in. Buying the wrong size means the toilet will either not reach the wall (gap behind it) or will not fit at all.
How do I measure rough-in without removing the toilet?
Measure from the finished wall (not baseboard) to the center of the floor bolt cap on either side of the toilet base. This is your rough-in distance. Standard values are 10", 12", or 14".
Can I use a 12" toilet in a 10" rough-in?
No — a 12" toilet will not reach the wall with a 10" rough-in, leaving a gap behind the tank. You need a toilet specifically made for a 10" rough-in. Some manufacturers offer the same model in 10", 12", and 14" versions.
What is the most common toilet rough-in size?
12" is the standard rough-in used in the vast majority of US homes built after 1960. 10" rough-ins are found in older homes or bathrooms where plumbing was run close to the wall. 14" rough-ins appear in some older homes built before 1940.
