State Electronic Ignition Igniter

Electronic ignition State units use an igniter instead of standing pilot. Diagnosis and replacement.

Newer State ProLine and ProLine XE units use electronic ignition instead of a standing pilot. The igniter creates a spark (or heats a hot surface) when the burner needs to fire. When the igniter fails, the burner won\'t light.

Two types of electronic ignition

  • Spark ignition: high-voltage spark across an electrode gap. Most common on State Power Vent units
  • Hot surface ignition: silicon carbide rod heats to 1,500°F+, ignites gas. Common on Direct Vent models

Symptoms

  • Burner won\'t light when thermostat calls for heat
  • 7 LED flashes (gas valve fault — but may be igniter-related)
  • Clicking sound at burner area with no flame (spark igniter)
  • Hot surface igniter glows but no flame

Diagnostic

  1. With gas off, observe ignition attempt:
    • Spark igniter: visible blue spark across electrode gap
    • Hot surface: glowing orange after 30 seconds
  2. No spark / no glow = igniter or igniter control module failed
  3. Spark/glow present but no flame = gas supply or gas valve issue

Replacement (DIY-friendly with caution)

  1. Turn off gas; wait 5 minutes
  2. Turn off 120V power to ignition module
  3. Remove burner cover
  4. Locate igniter (small ceramic-encased component near burner)
  5. Disconnect igniter cable from ignition control module
  6. Unscrew or unclip igniter from mounting bracket
  7. Install new igniter — handle carefully (ceramic is brittle)
  8. Connect cable
  9. Restore gas and 120V power
  10. Trigger ignition cycle to verify operation

Cost

  • Spark igniter: $40-80
  • Hot surface igniter: $50-100
  • Ignition control module (the brain): $80-150
  • Pro replacement: $200-400

Hot surface igniter handling

Don\'t touch the silicon carbide element with your fingers — skin oils can cause premature failure when it heats. Hold by the ceramic base only.

Visual inspection during ignition attempt identifies igniter vs gas valve issue. DIY replacement is feasible but handle ceramics carefully.
