State Reset

How to Reset a State Water Heater

Reset procedures for State ProLine gas, ProLine electric, Power Vent, and Premier Hybrid.

Updated May 2026 · State Water Heaters

State water heaters have several reset paths depending on the unit type.

Electric units — ECO reset

Most common reset path:

  1. Turn off the breaker
  2. Remove the upper access panel
  3. Locate the red ECO button on the upper thermostat
  4. Press firmly until you feel/hear a click
  5. Replace panel and restore breaker

If the ECO trips again immediately, the underlying issue is active — typically a stuck-closed thermostat or shorted element.

Gas units — gas valve cycle

  1. Turn the gas control knob to "Off"
  2. Wait 5 minutes for any residual gas to dissipate
  3. Turn knob to "Pilot" (if standing pilot) or "On" (if electronic ignition)
  4. For standing pilot: depress pilot button and light per instructions on the unit
  5. Monitor LED flash code on gas valve

Power Vent — combined reset

Power vent units have an electrical reset (120V to fan) plus gas valve cycle:

  1. Unplug the 120V power to the fan
  2. Cycle the gas control knob (off → pilot → on)
  3. Plug power back in
  4. Fan should start within seconds when there's a heating call

Premier Hybrid heat pump — multiple reset paths

  • Mode reset: press mode button on display panel
  • ECO reset: red button on resistance backup thermostat (same as electric)
  • Compressor lockout: turn off breaker for 30 minutes, restore. This clears compressor protection
  • Factory reset: hold mode + temperature buttons for 10 seconds (requires re-pairing if Wi-Fi-equipped)

When reset doesn't fix things

Three consecutive resets with immediate re-trip = real fault. Stop cycling and work through the diagnostic walkthrough on the specific LED flash code or symptom.

Bottom line

Electric: ECO red button. Gas: gas valve cycle. Power Vent: power cycle + gas cycle. Premier Hybrid: mode reset → ECO → breaker → factory.
