Whirlpool Energy Smart 50-Gallon Electric Water Heater
Whirlpool Energy Smart 50-Gallon Electric Water Heater Review
The Whirlpool Energy Smart 50-Gallon Electric is an upmarket Whirlpool electric tank with integrated "smart" control electronics. Like the Energy Smart Gas variant, it's built by AO Smith with Whirlpool branding for the Lowe's channel.
Specs: 50 gallons stored, two 4500W heating elements, UEF 0.95, 62-gallon first-hour rating, 9-year tank warranty (versus 6-year for standard Whirlpool 50-gal Electric). The Energy Smart control system monitors usage patterns and adjusts heating schedules to reduce standby losses.
The Energy Smart positioning sits between standard Whirlpool electric and the AO Smith-branded Voltex/Signature Premier lines. The 9-year warranty and smart control module are the upgrades versus standard. ENERGY STAR Most Efficient certification.
Right buyer: Lowe's-channel shopper wanting better warranty than standard Whirlpool electric without stepping up to a heat-pump. About $749 at Lowe's, $1,300 installed. For most longer-term primary residence buyers, either the AO Smith Voltex heat-pump (much lower operating cost) or the Rheem Marathon (lifetime warranty) is a better economic choice. The Energy Smart sits in an awkward middle ground — better than budget but not as compelling as the truly differentiated alternatives.
