Most Noritz problems display a numeric error code on the controller — start there. This page covers symptom-based diagnostics for cases where no code is displayed or where the code alone doesn't explain the user-visible problem.
No hot water at all
Sequence: (1) confirm power (display lit); (2) verify gas supply (other gas appliances working); (3) check controller for error code — most likely Code 11 (no ignition); (4) confirm water flow exceeds minimum activation (about 0.5 GPM on most NRC models, 0.4 GPM on newer EZTR). Low-flow restrictors or aerators in faucets can drop flow below activation. The "LCO" message on the controller specifically means low water flow.
Lukewarm water
Three causes: (1) temperature setpoint too low — check the controller (default 120°F; up to 140°F residential, 180°F commercial); (2) cold-sandwich effect; (3) scaled heat exchanger reducing efficiency — see flushing guide.
Cold-sandwich on Noritz
Noritz units don't have a buffer tank (unlike Navien NPE-A2). Cold-sandwich on brief inter-draw pauses is real on standard NRC/NCC models. Three fixes: (1) upgrade to EZTR series with built-in recirculation pump; (2) install an external Grundfos recirculation pump; (3) accept the brief cold-sandwich (most homeowners don't notice after a few weeks).
EZTR recirculation pump issues
If recirculation stops working on an EZTR unit:
- Check the controller's recirculation schedule settings (may be set to "off")
- Listen for the pump cycling — failed pump bearings are audible
- Verify the return-line check valve is functioning (water shouldn't flow backwards)
- If pump is silent and recirc is enabled, internal pump has failed — see parts
Commercial cascade — common cascade-specific issues
For NCC commercial installs in cascade configuration:
- Code 76 (communication) — Quick Connect cord between units is loose or damaged. Re-seat connections; check for cord damage
- One unit not firing in cascade — the cascade controller may have isolated that unit due to a fault. Check that unit's individual controller for error codes
- Uneven wear pattern — verify the cascade controller's rotation mode is set to "balanced" rather than "lead-lag"
- Total output below expected — count active units in the cascade; one or more may be in lockout
Water heater leaking
Common Noritz leak points:
- Pressure relief valve — replace; check for excess thermal expansion (install expansion tank)
- Condensate trap on condensing models — clean trap; verify drain line not blocked
- Inlet/outlet isolation valves — re-torque or replace washers
- Heat exchanger — rare but terminal. Usually accompanied by Code 14. Dealer-only replacement
Burner cycling / short-cycling
Burner firing repeatedly during a single draw usually means modulation issues. Causes: undersized gas line (verify pressure under full load with manometer), gas pressure drop during cooking events from other appliances, scaled heat exchanger, undersized unit for actual demand.
NRCB combi boiler — heat or DHW not both
If heat works but DHW doesn't (or vice versa) on an NRCB combi:
- 3-way diverter valve failed — internal valve switches between heating loop and DHW. Dealer replacement
- DHW flow sensor failed — burner not firing on hot-tap demand. See flow sensor
- Heating-loop circulator pump failed — heat-only symptom; pump replacement
Bottom line
Numeric error codes solve 80% of cases. For the remaining 20%, work through this symptom chart. Commercial cascade installs add a few unique fault modes — verify Quick Connect connections and individual unit lockouts first. Persistent issues warrant a Noritz-trained installer.
