The ecoTOUGH heat exchanger is the core of every Noritz condensing unit — and the part the 12-year residential warranty is centered on. Built from 316L stainless steel, it's heavier-gauge than typical SS304 used by competitors.
Why ecoTOUGH matters
The 316L stainless alloy contains molybdenum, which increases pitting and corrosion resistance compared to the more common SS304. Practical benefits:
- Greater resistance to chloride attack (important in some regional water supplies)
- Better tolerance for acidic condensate (condensing units always produce pH 3-5 condensate)
- Longer service life in hard-water installs (20-30% improvement over SS304)
- Suitable for commercial duty cycles (12-16 hour/day operation in restaurants, hotels)
Failure modes
- Scale insulation (#1 cause): calcium scale on water-side surfaces blocks heat transfer. Burner runs hot; overheat (Code 14) trips. If ignored, exchanger metal deforms permanently
- Pinhole leak: after 12-15 years, pinhole corrosion possible. Symptom: condensate trap unusually wet
- Freeze damage: power loss in winter with water inside cracks the exchanger
- Chloride pitting (rare): in installs with high-chloride water (some well water, some coastal supplies) and skipped maintenance
Replacement cost
- Parts: $700-1,400 OEM, model-dependent
- Labor: $400-700 from Noritz-trained installer
- Total: $1,100-2,100 out of warranty
Replace exchanger or replace unit?
If unit is 8+ years old and out of labor warranty, exchanger replacement runs 50-70% of new-unit cost. Most Noritz dealers recommend new unit at that point. Inside the heat exchanger warranty period — replace exchanger (you only pay labor).
Warranty claim
Inside the 12-year residential heat exchanger warranty (or 10-year commercial), the part is covered. Labor covered only in year 1. Year-8 NRC1111 failure: Noritz ships the part free to a Noritz-trained installer; you pay $500 labor.
Catch: Noritz's inspector evaluates the failed exchanger for scale. Heavy scale = claim denied as maintenance failure. Keep descaling documentation.
Commercial NCC heat exchanger
Commercial NCC units have a 10-year heat-exchanger warranty (longer than Rinnai or Navien commercial). Commercial duty cycles can accelerate scale formation, so commercial customers descale more frequently — typically every 6-9 months in hard-water restaurant/hotel environments.
Prevention
- Annual descaling
- Water softener above 11 grains per gallon (required for warranty)
- Annual inlet water filter cleaning
- 120°F setpoint unless an appliance forces higher
Bottom line
Heat exchanger is the part you protect through maintenance. The ecoTOUGH 316L construction gives you a longevity advantage of 20-30% over competitors — but only if you actually maintain the unit. See maintenance schedule.
