Most Ruud problems map to standard tank/tankless symptom patterns. Tankless units display numeric error codes — start there.
No hot water — gas tanks
- Check the LED status indicator on the gas valve
- Inspect pilot (if standing pilot model) — relight per unit instructions
- If pilot won\'t stay lit: replace thermocouple
- For electronic ignition units: check 120V power, then igniter
- Last resort: gas valve failure (dealer replacement)
No hot water — electric tanks
(1) Check breaker; (2) press ECO red button on upper thermostat; (3) test upper element and thermostat with multimeter.
Lukewarm water — electric
Lower element or lower thermostat failed.
Hot water runs out fast
Most common cause: broken dip tube. Replace dip tube ($5-15 part, 30-min DIY).
Professional Hybrid heat pump issues
- Mode setting: default should be Hybrid; verify hasn\'t been accidentally changed to Heat Pump Only or Electric Only
- Breaker: 30A double-pole. Repeated trips indicate compressor or wiring fault
- Air filter: vacuum monthly — clogged filter shuts down heat pump mode
- Condensate drain: verify free flow; full pan triggers safety shutoff
- Compressor lockout: breaker off 30 minutes, restore
Ultra Series Tankless issues
Check the digital controller for an error code:
- Code 11 — ignition failure
- Code 12 — flame failure mid-draw
- Code 14 — overheat (scaled heat exchanger)
- Code 79 — combustion fan
- Code 99 — exhaust restriction
Water heater leaking
Top fittings: tighten or replace washers. T&P drips: thermal expansion (install expansion tank). Bottom of tank: shell failure — replace unit.
Popping or rumbling noise
Sediment. Flush the tank.
Rotten egg smell
Switch to aluminum-zinc anode + shock-chlorinate.
Power Vent fan won\'t run
Check 120V outlet, fan motor, capacitor — diagnose in that order.
Bottom line
For tanks: standard tank diagnostics (Rheem patterns). For Ultra Tankless: numeric error codes identify most issues. For Hybrid: mode + air filter before suspecting compressor.
