Ruud Install Guide

Ruud Water Heater Installation

Install requirements for Ruud tanks, Power Vent, Hybrid Heat Pump, and Ultra Tankless.

Updated May 2026 · Ruud Water Heaters

Ruud install requirements are identical to Rheem install requirements for equivalent product types — same manufacturing.

Professional Classic / Achiever / Achiever Plus / Ultra (atmospheric gas)

  • Existing B-vent chimney with proper draft
  • Gas line: ½" up to 40k BTU / ¾" for 50k+ BTU
  • Combustion air per code (50 cubic feet per 1,000 BTU/hr in confined spaces)
  • T&P discharge
  • Drain pan with overflow when above living space

Professional Achiever Power Vent

  • 120V outlet within 6 ft of unit
  • PVC sidewall venting (2" or 3")
  • Vent length per manual (typically 65-100 ft equivalent)
  • Termination clearances per code

Professional Ultra Power Direct Vent

  • Two-pipe sealed combustion venting
  • 120V outlet for inducer fan
  • Vent up to 60 ft equivalent length

Professional Classic electric / Achiever Plus electric

  • 240V dedicated 30A circuit
  • 10-gauge copper wire
  • T&P discharge
  • Drain pan when above living space

Professional Hybrid Heat Pump

  • 240V dedicated 30A circuit
  • 700+ cubic feet of unconditioned air space
  • Ambient 40°F+ for heat pump mode
  • Condensate drain — 4-8 gallons/day
  • Clearances: 7" front, 4" sides, 7" top
  • Compressor noise ~50-55 dB

Ultra Series Tankless

  • Gas line: ¾" required for 130 kBTU; ¾" minimum for 199 kBTU (1" preferred for runs over 50 ft)
  • Venting: 2" or 3" PVC Schedule 40 (concentric or two-pipe)
  • Condensate drain: 1-2 gallons/day; trap + drain or condensate pump
  • Water softener: required above 11 grains per gallon for warranty
  • Outdoor variant: no venting required; freeze protection circuit requires 120V power

Permits

Required in most US jurisdictions.

Commissioning

  1. Purge air from gas line
  2. Open isolation valves
  3. Power on; verify display
  4. Set temperature (120°F default)
  5. For condensing: verify condensate drainage
  6. Register warranty

Bottom line

Standard Ruud installs are within range of competent plumbers. Hybrid Heat Pump requires verifying the 700+ cubic feet air space. Ultra Tankless requires ¾" gas line and proper PVC venting — common install failure mode is undersized gas line.
