Descaling is the most important Ruud Ultra Tankless maintenance task. Scale insulates the heat exchanger, reduces output, and triggers Code 14 (overheat).
Tools needed
- Submersible pump kit ($40-60 on Amazon)
- Two 5-gallon buckets
- 4 gallons of white vinegar OR 1 gallon of commercial descaler
- Two ¾" garden hoses
- Crescent wrench
Prep
- Turn off gas at the unit\'s shutoff
- Close cold-water and hot-water isolation valves (the service valve kit installed at install)
- Open a hot tap to release residual pressure
- Allow 10 minutes for the unit to cool
Connect the pump
- Attach one hose to cold-side isolation service port
- Drop into bucket with descaler
- Attach second hose to hot-side service port; drop into same bucket (closed loop)
- Submersible pump in bucket; connect to cold-side hose
Run the descale
- Open both service ports; verify main valves closed
- Plug in pump
- Circulate 45-60 minutes
- Fluid will discolor, may foam — scale dissolving
Rinse
- Unplug pump; close cold-side service port
- Disconnect cold hose; open cold-water main valve briefly to flush fresh water through and out hot-side hose into clean bucket (5-10 gallons until clear)
- Close hot-side service port; disconnect hot hose
- Open both main valves
Restart
- Open hot tap; run until flow is steady (no air)
- Turn gas back on
- Power-cycle if any error code appears
- Verify operation
How often
Hard water (>11 gpg) — annually. Soft water (<7 gpg) — every 2 years. With softener — every 3 years.
Bottom line
Document with dated photos for warranty defense. The 12-year Ruud Ultra Tankless heat exchanger warranty is defensible only with documented annual descaling in hard water.
