AO Smith operates four brand badges in US retail and wholesale water heater distribution, all manufactured in the same AO Smith facilities (McBee SC, Ashland City TN, Juarez Mexico, Fergus Ontario) with the same engineering team and components. The differences are channel, warranty tier within channel, and badge.

The strategic intent: AO Smith Signature and State cover Lowe\'s. Whirlpool covers the brand-recognition cross-shop at Lowe\'s. Reliance covers everything that isn\'t Lowe\'s — Ace Hardware\'s ~5,000 US stores, True Value\'s ~4,500 stores, Do it Best\'s ~4,000 stores, and the contractor-direct plumbing wholesale channel that doesn\'t run through Ferguson (which carries State for AO Smith). Availability is the catch: HPHE-50 and HPHE-66 are stocked at a fraction of Reliance dealers. Larger Ace and True Value stores in heat-pump-incentive markets (CA, MA, NY, OR, VT, WA) carry them; smaller hardware stores often don\'t. Call ahead. Reliance shares the AO Smith family LED flash code system on gas tanks. The status LED is on the gas valve. Flash codes translate directly across the family — same codes mean the same things on State, AO Smith Signature, Whirlpool, and Reliance.
