The anode rod is the single most important maintenance item on any glass-lined steel tank — including Reliance. The rod sacrifices itself to corrosion so the tank doesn\'t. Once the rod is consumed, the tank starts corroding and the warranty clock effectively ends.
Anode rod types for Reliance
Magnesium (factory default)
- Pros: highest sacrificial protection; standard on most Reliance units
- Cons: can react with sulfate-reducing bacteria to produce rotten egg smell
- Best for: chlorinated municipal water without sulfur smell
Aluminum-zinc
- Pros: eliminates sulfur smell; lasts slightly longer than magnesium
- Cons: slightly less protection than magnesium
- Best for: well water and homes experiencing rotten-egg smell
Powered titanium
- Pros: doesn\'t sacrifice — uses electrical impressed current; lasts 20+ years; no smell
- Cons: $120-200 part vs $20-40 for traditional; requires 120V outlet
- Best for: high-end install on Premium 12-50-NORT to extend tank life
Replacement schedule
- Soft water: inspect at year 5; replace at year 7-8
- Moderate hardness (5-10 gpg): inspect at year 4; replace at year 5-6
- Hard water (10-15 gpg): inspect at year 3; replace at year 4
- Very hard water (15+ gpg): inspect annually; replace at year 2-3
- Softened water: can accelerate consumption — inspect at year 3
Where the anode is on Reliance
Most Reliance Standard tanks have a single hex-head anode on top, often hidden under a plastic cap. Premium and some Power Vent models use a combination anode integrated into the hot outlet. Hybrid HPHE has both a top anode and a secondary anode in the manifold.
DIY replacement procedure
- Turn off heat source and cold inlet
- Open a hot tap upstairs to break vacuum
- Drain 5 gallons via the drain valve (just enough to drop level below the anode head)
- Remove the anode hex cap or plastic cover
- Use a 1-1/16" socket on a long breaker bar to unscrew the anode (use cheater pipe if needed — can be torqued tight)
- Lift out the rod — likely bent and degraded
- For low-ceiling installs (less than 50") use a flexible link-segment anode
- Apply Teflon tape (3-4 wraps) to threads
- Install new anode, hand-tight plus ¼-turn with the wrench
- Restore cold inlet, refill tank, restore heat source

Bottom line
Replacing the anode at year 4-5 instead of letting it run out is the single most impactful thing you can do for Reliance tank longevity. Magnesium is the default; switch to aluminum-zinc if you smell sulfur.
