Reliance Water Heater Troubleshooting

Symptom-based diagnostics for Reliance Standard Gas, Electric, Power Vent, Mini-Tank, and Hybrid Heat Pump. Same procedures as AO Smith family.

Updated May 2026 · Reliance Water Heaters

Most Reliance problems map to standard tank diagnostics. Same procedures as State, AO Smith, and Whirlpool equivalents — shared AO Smith manufacturing and gas valve hardware.

No hot water — gas (6-NORT / 9-NORT / 12-NORT)

  1. Read the LED flash code on the gas valve. See Reliance error codes
  2. 1 flash = normal. Check thermostat setting (120°F or "C")
  3. 2 flashes = thermopile low. Clean intake screen; replace thermocouple
  4. 4 flashes = ECO lockout. Verify tank is full; reset thermostat
  5. 5 flashes = vacuum/draft issue. Inspect chimney for obstruction or back-drafting
  6. 7 flashes = gas valve fault. Dealer replacement under warranty
  7. 8 flashes = combustion air switch / intake blocked. Vacuum the FVIR intake screen at the base

No hot water — electric (6-EORS / 9-EORS)

  1. Breaker: reset 240V double-pole breaker. Repeated trips indicate element short or wiring
  2. ECO reset: red reset button on upper thermostat (under the upper access cover)
  3. Element test: see Reliance element resistance test — 10-16 Ω at 4500W is healthy
  4. Thermostat test: upper or lower stuck open = no heat in respective section

Lukewarm water

  • Gas: thermostat set too low (raise to 120°F). Sediment insulation between burner and tank water
  • Electric: lower element or lower thermostat failed. Upper section heats; lower stays cold — water mixes lukewarm

Hot water runs out fast

Most common cause: broken dip tube. Incoming cold water mixes with hot at the top instead of dropping to the bottom. Replace dip tube — $5-15 part, 30-min DIY. Less common: heavy sediment displacing usable water volume. Flush the tank annually.

Reliance Hybrid Heat Pump (HPHE) issues

  • Mode setting: if accidentally on "Heat Pump Only" in cold ambient (below 40°F), output is inadequate. Switch to Hybrid or Electric mode
  • Air filter: clogged filter shuts down heat pump mode. Pull and vacuum monthly
  • Condensate drain: blocked drain triggers safety shutoff — clear the trap
  • Breaker: 30A double-pole. Repeated trips indicate compressor or wiring fault
  • Resistance backup: if compressor fails, unit defaults to resistance heating — slow recovery, high energy use, lights "HP" warning
  • Air space: needs 700+ cubic feet around the unit. Closet installs without louvered doors trip "high temperature" alarms

Power Vent (6-PVRT) specific

  • Fan won\'t start: check 120V outlet → capacitor → blower motor in that order
  • 5 flashes: draft / vacuum switch fault — check vent termination for obstruction (bird nest, snow)
  • Excess condensate: normal in long PVC runs; ensure condensate trap is primed

Point-of-Use Mini-Tank (SOMS) issues

  • No hot water: verify 120V outlet has power; reset ECO on the rear panel (red button)
  • Leak around outlet fitting: tighten compression nut; replace washer if hardened
  • Runs out fast: 6-gallon delivers ~10 gallons first-hour — normal limit. Step up to 10-gallon for higher demand

Water heater leaking

Top fittings: tighten or replace washers. T&P discharge: thermal expansion (install expansion tank) or overpressure. Bottom of tank: shell failure — replace unit, not repairable. See leaking diagnosis.

Popping or rumbling noise

Sediment buildup. Flush the tank. If noise persists after flush, sediment has hardened — flush every 6 months until clear or accept the noise.

Rotten egg smell

Sulfate-reducing bacteria reacting with magnesium anode rod. Switch to aluminum-zinc or powered titanium anode, then shock-chlorinate the tank. See sulfur smell diagnosis.

Bottom line

Gas: LED flash code identifies most failures. Electric: breaker → ECO reset → element ohms → thermostat. Hybrid: mode + air filter + condensate before suspecting compressor. Mini-tank: 120V power + ECO reset.
