Most AO Smith water heater problems trace to about a dozen recognizable symptom patterns. This page walks through each. For specific error codes, see our AO Smith error codes hub. For warranty status, check the warranty page first.
No hot water at all
Gas tank (Signature Premier / ProMax / ProLine): check pilot. Pilot out = failed thermocouple in 80% of cases ($25–$40 part, 30-minute DIY). See our thermocouple page.
Electric tank (Signature 100 / ProMax electric): trip the breaker. Check upper element first — most "no hot water" calls on electric AO Smith trace to upper element failure or upper thermostat fault. See element replacement.
ProLine Tankless: check display. No display = power loss (verify 120V outlet). Display works but no hot water = inlet filter blocked (clean filter screen).
Voltex Hybrid: check the mode setting. If accidentally set to "Heat Pump Only" in cold ambient, output can feel like no hot water. Switch to "Hybrid" or "Electric" mode.
Lukewarm water — won't reach hot
Gas: thermostat dial low, or gas control valve partially failed and modulating output too low. Crank to 130°F and wait. If still lukewarm, replace gas valve (pro-recommended, ~$200–$300 part).
Electric: lower element failed. Upper keeps top hot but as you draw water you pull cold up from bottom faster than upper can heat. Replace lower element ($30–$50, 60-minute DIY).
Pilot won't stay lit
Thermocouple fix in 80% of cases. See our thermocouple replacement page. Other 20%: dirty/failed pilot assembly (replace ~$60–$120), gas control valve failure (rare), or thermopile failure on FVIR-compliant Signature Premier units.
Water heater leaking
Top of tank: connection or T&P valve — repairable. Replace T&P ($25 part).
Middle of tank: element gasket leak on electric — replace element with new gasket.
Bottom of tank: tank shell has failed. No repair — schedule replacement. See our warranty page for claim process if still in coverage.
Popping or rumbling sounds
Sediment in the tank bottom traps water that boils when the burner fires. Flush the tank annually to prevent — and to fix it once started. AO Smith's Hydrojet system on Signature Premier reduces sediment accumulation. See our maintenance schedule.
Reset button keeps tripping
Electric AO Smith high-limit reset (red button on upper thermostat) tripping means over-temperature. Causes: bad thermostat (most common — replace), shorted element, stuck-closed mixing valve. Reset once; if it trips again within 24 hours, call a service tech.
When to call a pro
DIY-friendly: thermocouple, anode rod, element, drain valve, T&P, flush.
Pro recommended: gas control valve (gas leak risk), heat exchanger on tankless, Voltex compressor or refrigerant work.
Bottom line
Most AO Smith water heater issues are diagnosable by symptom and repairable for under $100. For full troubleshooting context with model-specific guidance see also our parts directory.
