The AO Smith serial number decode
AO Smith uses a year + week format. Read the first 4 digits of your AO Smith serial number:
- First 2 digits: year (last 2 digits — 05=2005, 14=2014, 23=2023)
- Next 2 digits: week of year (01-52)
- Remaining characters: production sequence
Example: serial 1842ABC123 decodes to 2018, week 42 = mid-October 2018. Serial 2317DEF = 2023, week 17 (late April).
Some older AO Smith serials use a letter prefix (A-M for month). If you see a letter at the start, the next 2 digits are year, and the remaining is sequence — same convention as Rheem's serial format.
Where to find the serial number
The serial is on the AO Smith data plate — usually on the side of the unit. For gas tanks, near the gas valve; for electric, near the upper element access; for tankless, on the side or back of the wall-mounted unit; for Voltex, on the side near the lower access panel.
