GE Water Heaters: full buyer's guide
GE (General Electric) is a legacy water heater brand no longer in current production. The GE water heater line was discontinued in stages: the famous GE GeoSpring hybrid heat pump line was sold to Bradford White / dropped in 2016, and the standard GE-branded gas and electric tanks (manufactured under contract by Rheem) ceased production over subsequent years. Despite no current production, millions of GE-branded water heaters remain in service in US homes.
The GE water heater legacy lineup
- GeoSpring Hybrid Heat Pump — pioneering residential heat pump water heater, 2008-2016. GeoSpring 50-gal. Replaced in market by Rheem ProTerra (same Rheem manufacturing)
- Legacy Gas Tank — Rheem-manufactured GE-branded atmospheric gas. GG50T06AVH 50-gal
- Legacy Electric Tank — Rheem-manufactured GE-branded electric. GE50T06AAH 50-gal
Who made GE water heaters?
GE never manufactured water heaters in-house in the post-2000 era. Production was contracted:
- GeoSpring Hybrid heat pump: manufactured by GE Appliances (later sold to Haier)
- Standard gas and electric tanks: manufactured by Rheem under contract
After GE Appliances divestiture and Sears bankruptcy disruption in retail, GE water heater production was discontinued. Existing GE units continue to be supported through Rheem\'s parts channel.
GeoSpring — historical significance
The GE GeoSpring (introduced 2008) was the first widely-sold residential heat pump water heater in the US market. It demonstrated that heat pump water heating was technically and commercially viable, paving the way for current heat pump leaders:
- Rheem ProTerra (4.0+ UEF — descendant of the GeoSpring after Rheem manufacturing transition)
- AO Smith Voltex
- Stiebel Eltron Accelera
GeoSpring owners experienced the early heat pump water heater technology — generally satisfactory long-term reliability with COP gains over resistance electric.
GE parts availability
Replacement parts for legacy GE water heaters are sourced through:
- Rheem parts channel (since Rheem manufactured most GE tanks)
- GE Appliances parts (GeoSpring hybrid heat pump)
- Amazon — universal water heater parts that fit GE
- Home Depot / Lowe\'s — universal anode, T&P, elements
Replacing a GE
For replacement of an existing GE water heater, the like-for-like path:
- GE GeoSpring Hybrid: replace with Rheem ProTerra (same manufacturer lineage; current production)
- GE legacy gas tank: replace with Rheem Performance equivalent (same manufacturer)
- GE legacy electric tank: replace with Rheem Performance Plus electric or Marathon composite (premium upgrade)
Warranty status
Most GE-branded water heaters are now past original warranty. Residual claims:
- Rheem-manufactured units: contact Rheem at 1-800-621-5622 with model and serial
- GeoSpring Hybrid: contact GE Appliances at 1-800-432-2737
Bottom line
GE is a legacy brand. No current GE-branded production. GeoSpring Hybrid was the pioneering US residential heat pump that established the category. For replacement, choose Rheem (same manufacturer for most GE legacy tanks) — Performance for budget, Performance Plus or Platinum for mid/premium, ProTerra for heat pump.
