Legacy GE warranty (pre-2016)

What's NOT covered
- Damage from improper installation (no expansion tank, wrong gas pressure, undersized circuit)
- Damage from water quality outside spec (TDS above 1,500 ppm, chloride/sulfur extremes)
- Hard-water mineral damage if water hardness exceeds 7 grains per gallon and no softener installed
- GeoSpring use in spaces below 40°F or above 120°F (heat pump won't operate; compressor damage possible)
- Freeze damage
- Cosmetic damage and shipping dents
- Consequential damage (flooded floors, mold remediation) — homeowner insurance scope
Filing a GE warranty claim
- Locate the serial number on the data plate (top of tank or near the gas valve)
- Identify the manufacture date from the serial (first 4 digits typically encode month/year)
- Call GE Appliances at 800-432-2737 (or GE Hybrid heat pump line for GeoSpring)
- Provide serial, manufacture date, installation address, original receipt or proof of purchase
- GE dispatches authorized service or ships replacement parts directly to your installer
Extended warranty options
Home Depot, Lowe's, and Costco all offer extended warranty programs on GE water heaters covering labor beyond year 1. Typical cost: $80–150 for an additional 3 years of labor coverage.
