GE GeoSpring Hybrid 50-Gallon Heat Pump Water Heater
GE GeoSpring Hybrid 50-Gallon Heat Pump Water Heater Review
The GE GeoSpring Hybrid 50-Gallon Heat Pump Water Heater is a discontinued heat-pump water heater from GE's appliance line. GE stopped selling water heaters in the US around 2018; the GeoSpring Hybrid units remain in service in many homes installed 2013-2018.
Specs: 50 gallons stored, integrated heat pump + backup resistance element, UEF 2.4-2.85 depending on sub-model and ambient conditions, 6-year tank warranty, 1-year parts warranty. Standard 30A 240V circuit.
The GeoSpring was an early entry in the residential heat-pump water heater category. Earlier generation than the current Rheem ProTerra and AO Smith Voltex Premium — UEF 2.4-2.85 versus current generation's UEF 3.45-3.55. Lower efficiency reflects older heat pump compressor technology.
Service support: limited. GE stopped manufacturing these. For replacement, the Rheem ProTerra 50-gal Hybrid or AO Smith Voltex Premium HPTU-50 are direct replacements with much higher efficiency. About $1,800 unit replacement (Rheem ProTerra), $2,800 installed.
For owners with existing GeoSpring needing repair: replacement parts increasingly scarce, typical fix today is unit replacement rather than repair.
