A toilet seat is the part of your Kohler that you replace most often — every 3–7 years for most households, sooner if hinges loosen or the soft-close mechanism fails. Kohler bowls use standard US bolt patterns, which means you have two options: a Kohler-branded replacement seat (matched styling, ~$45–$280) or a universal Bemis, Mayfair, or American Standard seat that fits the same bolt pattern (~$25–$120). Here's how to choose.

First decision: elongated or round?

Measure the bowl. From the bolt holes at the back to the front of the bowl:

  • ~16.5 inches: round-front bowl. Buy a "round" toilet seat.
  • ~18.5 inches: elongated bowl. Buy an "elongated" or "elongated extended" seat.
  • ~17.5 inches: compact-elongated bowl (Kohler Persuade, some Adair models). Most "elongated" seats fit but check the seat-overhang specs — should be no more than 1" past the front of the bowl.

Round seats DO NOT fit elongated bowls. Elongated seats fit round bowls but extend uncomfortably forward — not recommended.

The Kohler seat-mounting hardware

All current Kohler residential toilets use the US-standard 5.5-inch bolt-spread mounting holes. This is the same pattern as American Standard, TOTO, Mansfield, Gerber — meaning a universal-brand seat from Bemis or Mayfair will mount correctly on a Kohler bowl. The exceptions are some 2010-and-earlier Kohler designer models (Memoirs Stately, some Bancroft models) that use Kohler-proprietary bolt patterns — verify before buying universal.

  • Lustra Plastic ($30–$50) — entry-tier non-soft-close. Plastic. The cheap landlord replacement.
  • Devonshire ($110–$160) — designer wooden seat with matched chrome hinges. For Memoirs and other Kohler classic-line bowls.
  • French Curve Soft-Close ($90) — modern slim seat with soft-close hinges. Glossy white standard, biscuit available.
  • PureWash bidet seats (Elongated, Round) ($240–$520) — Kohler's electronic bidet replacement seat. Heated seat option, dual-temperature bidet wash, fits Kohler bowls with standard hookup.

Universal-brand alternatives that fit Kohler bowls

Common Kohler seat failure modes

  1. Soft-close hinge fails (most common). Lid slams or doesn't close at all. The soft-close cylinder mechanism loses oil after 5–8 years of use. Replace the seat — repair is not feasible.
  2. Bolt-mounting hardware cracks. Plastic bolts and washers degrade in hot/humid bathrooms. Replace with brass hardware ($8 kit) and the seat usually survives another 5+ years.
  3. Seat shifts on bowl. The Grip-Tight bumpers wear out. On Brevia seats, replace just the rubber bumper pads ($5 pack). On other seats, replace the whole seat.
  4. Color discoloration. Glossy white seats yellow over 7–10 years from UV exposure. No fix — replace.
  5. Bidet electronic seat malfunction. Refer to specific seat manual; usually the heating element or the pump. Out-of-warranty repairs may not be cost-effective vs replacement.

How to replace a Kohler toilet seat (10 minutes)

  1. Remove the existing seat: lift the bolt caps at the back of the bowl, unscrew the plastic or metal bolts holding the seat to the bowl. Pull the seat off.
  2. Clean the mounting area: wipe with disinfectant; the area under the bolt caps accumulates the worst grime.
  3. Position the new seat over the bolt holes. Insert the new bolts (most seats come with bolts; if not, use a $8 brass-bolt kit).
  4. Tighten by hand only — never use pliers; you'll crack the porcelain.
  5. Snap the bolt caps closed. Done.

Where to find your seat replacement part number

The original seat that came with your Kohler is identified in the Kohler product manual (Kohler.com → search by model number → "Service Parts"). The model number is usually printed under the tank lid or on the back of the tank. If you can't find the original seat, any standard elongated or round seat in the correct bolt pattern will fit — the original color and style are the only matching considerations.
