Pre-installation requirements
- Verify rough-in distance (12-inch standard; some Kohler models support 10" and 14")
- Cold-water supply with shutoff valve
- Drain pan if installed above finished space
- Verify drain flange is at floor level (not below; not significantly above)
- New wax ring and closet bolts
- For one-piece Kohler models (San Souci, Memoirs, Aimes equivalent), plan two-person lift — units weigh 100-130 lbs empty
Step 1: Remove old toilet
- Shut off cold water supply at the angle stop
- Flush to drain tank; sponge remaining water
- Disconnect supply line
- Remove closet bolt nuts (may require channel-lock pliers if rusted)
- Lift old toilet straight up — two-person lift for tank+bowl combined weight
- Scrape old wax cleanly from the closet flange surface
Step 2: Inspect closet flange
Kohler installations require flange in good condition. If flange is cracked, broken, or below floor level, replace it before proceeding. A new toilet on a damaged flange will leak regardless of installation quality. Standard 4-inch PVC or cast-iron flanges work with Kohler installations.
Step 3: Place new wax ring and bolts
Drop new 5/16" closet bolts into the flange slots, secure with plastic retainer washers. Place wax ring on the flange — flange-side placement is more forgiving for first-timers. Kohler ships their toilets with the wax ring positioning that works for both flange and bowl-horn placement.
Step 4: Set the Kohler unit
For two-piece models, install the tank first, then the bowl. For one-piece models, the unit installs as a single piece. Lower the bowl (or one-piece) straight down onto the flange, aligning closet bolts through the base mounting holes. Press straight down with full body weight to compress the wax ring. Do not rock or twist — both actions break the wax seal and require re-installation.
Step 5: Tighten closet bolts
Hand-tighten the nuts alternately to keep bowl level. Then wrench another 1/4 turn each side. Stop when toilet is firm against floor. Kohler porcelain is high-quality but over-tightening still cracks the base.
Step 6: Connect supply and tank (two-piece)
For two-piece models, install the tank onto the bowl using the supplied spud gasket. Hand-tighten tank bolts; do not over-tighten. Install AquaPiston canister into the flush valve seat. The canister snaps into place — verify it sits flush against the seat.
Step 7: Fill and test
Connect supply line. Open the angle stop. Allow tank to fill completely before flushing. Flush 2-3 times to verify operation. Check for leaks at: bowl-to-floor joint, supply connection, tank-to-bowl gasket (two-piece), AquaPiston canister seal.
Kohler-specific installation notes
- AquaPiston canister: requires no service for 10+ years; verify it seats properly during install
- Reveal glaze: handle bowl during install with clean hands to avoid fingerprints on the glazed surface
- Some Kohler models use proprietary supply-line nipples; standard 7/8" or 1-1/4" supply lines fit

Common install mistakes
- Reusing the old wax ring (always use new for proper seal)
