Vaughn water heaters carry one of the longest warranties in the residential market, reflecting the stainless-steel tank construction. The headline number is generous, but as always with water-heater warranties, the fine print determines what's actually covered.

Warranty terms by product line

ProductTankPartsLabor
S-Series residential electric (stainless)Lifetime to original owner1 year1 year
SS-Series solar storageLifetime1 year1 year
HSE indirect-firedLifetime1 year1 year
Commercial Vaughn tanks5–10 year (varies)1 year1 year

What's actually covered

  • Tank failure (residential): any leak through the stainless tank wall, regardless of cause, lifetime. Vaughn covers replacement tank at no cost; labor is not covered after year 1.
  • Parts (year 1): elements, thermostat, T&P valve, dip tube — replaced or shipped free if defective.
  • Workmanship (year 1): manufacturing defects beyond the tank itself (weld failures at fittings, factory porosity in valves, etc.).

What is NOT covered

  • Failure from improper installation (no expansion tank where required, wrong supply pressure, incorrect electrical sizing)
  • Damage from freeze — water heaters left in unheated spaces during winter
  • Damage from water quality outside published spec (TDS over 1,000 ppm, chloride concentration over recommended limits)
  • Cosmetic damage or jacket dents from shipping
  • Failure from third-party additives in tank (descaling chemicals not approved by Vaughn)
  • Labor and consequential damage (flooded floors, drywall) — homeowner's insurance scope

Critical claim requirements

1. Product registration. Lifetime warranty applies only if the unit is registered within 60 days of installation. Vaughn provides the registration card with the unit; can also register at vaughncorp.com/warranty.

2. Proof of purchase. Original receipt with date, dealer name, and matching serial number. Keep this with house records — it's required even years into a claim.

3. Original installation address. Warranty is tied to the address the unit was first installed at. If the house is sold, the warranty does not transfer unless you complete a formal transfer document during the sale.

How to file a claim

  1. Stop using the unit and shut off power/water if leaking.
  2. Document the failure with photos showing the leak point and the data plate.
  3. Call Vaughn customer service: typical response within 2 business days.
  4. Ship the defective unit back at Vaughn's cost (RMA process) OR provide photos for assessment.
  5. Replacement tank shipped within 2–4 weeks once warranty is approved.

For installer-related issues during the labor warranty period, Vaughn coordinates with the original installer of record (registered at install time).
