How HSE differs from a glass-lined indirect

The HSE uses 316L stainless throughout — tank wall, exchanger coil, and fittings. The same lifetime warranty that applies to Vaughn's residential electric S-Series extends to the HSE. Where a glass-lined indirect requires anode rod inspection at year 5 and eventual replacement, the HSE skips that maintenance category entirely. For installations in hard-water or high-chloride environments where glass-lined indirects routinely fail at year 12–15, the HSE's stainless construction is the structural differentiator.

Sizing and primary-loop matching

HSE is available in 40, 60, and 80-gallon residential capacities, with larger commercial sizes available. The 60-gallon HSE pairs well with a 100,000–150,000 BTU/hr boiler for typical 3-bath residential domestic hot water service. Match the boiler-side BTU output to the HSE's coil rating — under-sized boilers result in slow recovery; over-sized boilers cycle short and reduce efficiency.

  • S-Series: standalone residential electric with internal elements. Use when no hydronic boiler exists.
  • HSE: indirect-fired storage for hydronic boiler systems. Use when boiler is present and DHW is a separate function.

Boiler brand compatibility

HSE works with any hydronic boiler — Lochinvar, Triangle Tube, HTP, Weil-McLain, Bosch, Burnham. The boiler doesn't need to be Vaughn-branded or specifically matched. The HSE's heat exchanger coil is sized for typical residential boiler primary temperatures (160°F–180°F supply) and pressure drops (manageable by standard residential circulator pumps).

Installation notes specific to HSE

Primary loop sequence: boiler supply → circulator pump (or zone valve) → HSE supply port → HSE return port → boiler return. Some installations use a dedicated DHW priority zone; others use indirect-priority logic on a modulating boiler. Verify your control strategy matches the boiler's capability — improper priority logic results in lukewarm hot water under high heating demand.

Expansion tank and protection

The domestic side of the HSE requires an expansion tank on the cold inlet, sized to the tank capacity (5-gallon for 60-gallon HSE typically). The boiler primary loop has its own expansion tank — these are separate systems. T&P relief valves on both sides protect against pressure excursions.
