Vaughn water heaters are stainless-steel constructed, which fundamentally changes the maintenance picture compared to glass-lined tanks. Stainless does not corrode, so there is no anode rod to inspect or replace — eliminating the single most labor-intensive routine maintenance task. What Vaughn tanks do need is annual T&P verification, periodic flush, and (on electric models) element resistance testing.
Annual maintenance — every year
1. Test the T&P relief valve
Lift the test lever fully for 1–2 seconds. Water should discharge through the discharge tube, then stop completely when the lever is released. A valve that dribbles after release is failing and must be replaced ($25 part, 30-minute DIY).
2. Drain and flush the tank
Although stainless tanks don't accumulate scale the way glass-lined tanks do, sediment from incoming water still settles. Annual partial flush — 2–3 gallons through the drain valve while the tank is hot — keeps the bottom clear.
3. Inspect for leaks
Visual check around all fittings, the T&P discharge tube outlet, and the base of the tank. Vaughn stainless welds are extremely durable but mechanical fittings (dielectric unions, valves) can still develop seep.
Every 3 years — electric models
Test heating elements
Vaughn uses standard-thread Incoloy elements on most residential electric units. With power off, remove the access panels and pull thermostat covers. Use a multimeter on the element terminals (Ohms setting): 5500 W element should read ~10–13 ohms; 4500 W ~12–16 ohms. Infinite resistance = element burned out.
Every 5–7 years
Inspect dip tube
Vaughn dip tubes are PEX-grade plastic. Remove and inspect for cracking or shortening — a degraded dip tube allows cold inlet water to mix with the upper hot zone, reducing apparent capacity. Replace if cracked.
Re-torque all electrical connections
Heat cycling loosens screw terminals on element wires, thermostat connections, and the high-limit cutoff. Loose terminals cause arcing and premature element failure. Snug all terminals with the appropriate torque (typically 18–22 in-lb).
What you skip with Vaughn (vs glass-lined competitors)
- Anode rod inspection/replacement — none required, ever. Saves $30 in parts and 45 minutes of labor every 3–5 years.

Solar storage configurations
Many Vaughn units are sold as solar storage tanks paired with collectors. For these, also annually: bleed air from the collector loop, verify glycol level in heat-transfer fluid (closed-loop systems), inspect collector pipe insulation for UV damage. A glycol charge under 50% requires service from the solar installer.
