Vaughn water heaters use a mix of OEM-specific and industry-standard parts. The stainless tank construction eliminates several wear items found on glass-lined competitors, but you still maintain electric elements, thermostats, T&P valves, and (on solar/indirect units) heat-exchanger coils.

Heating elements (electric models)
Vaughn S-Series uses standard 1" NPT screw-in elements. Most units ship with 4500 W or 5500 W Incoloy elements rated 240V. Replacement options:
- OEM Vaughn elements: $35–55, available through Vaughn dealer network
- Standard aftermarket equivalent: Camco 02922 / Reliance 100109109 — $15–25, fits with no modification
Vaughn supports lifetime element pricing for warranty units. After warranty, source equivalents at any plumbing supply or Home Depot.
Thermostats
Standard Vaughn residential thermostats are dual-stage with high-limit cutoff. Upper thermostat (with reset button) and lower thermostat (no reset). Compatible aftermarket: Honeywell L4080, Therm-O-Disc 59T series — $25–40 each.
T&P relief valve
3/4" NPT, set to 150 psi / 210°F per ASME standard. Direct replacement: Watts 100XL, Honeywell EW100, or Apollo Valves all work — $15–30. Replace every 5 years preventively.
Dip tube
Vaughn uses PEX-grade dip tubes. Replacement after 7–10 years is preventive maintenance — a fragmenting dip tube allows cold water to surface, reducing apparent capacity. Universal dip tubes ($8–15) fit most Vaughn residential units.
Drain valve
Most Vaughn residential ship with a brass quarter-turn ball-valve drain (vs the cheap plastic drains found on entry-level competitors). When the drain seal weeps, the entire assembly unscrews from the tank with a pipe wrench. Direct replacement: any 3/4" NPT brass boiler drain — $12–20.
Solar / indirect-fired specific parts
Heat-exchanger coils (HSE indirect)
Vaughn HSE units have an internal copper coil that transfers heat from a boiler loop into the potable water tank. Coils are field-replaceable but require specialized installation — generally a service call to a licensed plumber familiar with Vaughn indirects.
Solar loop temperature sensors
SS-Series solar storage tanks include 10kΩ NTC thermistor sensors at multiple tank-wall taps. Failed sensors show "open circuit" or "shorted" readings on the differential controller. Replace with Vaughn part or generic 10kΩ NTC — $15–25.
What you do NOT need to source
- Anode rod: Vaughn stainless tanks have no anode — never required.
- Glass-lining touchup: not applicable.
