The Rinnai PCB (printed circuit board, also called control board or "logic board") is the unit's central computer. It reads sensors, drives the gas valve, runs ignition, manages modulation, talks to the ControlR Wi-Fi module, and logs faults. When it fails, the unit's behavior becomes erratic and the error codes don't always map cleanly to physical causes.
Symptoms suggesting PCB failure
- Multiple unrelated error codes in rapid succession
- Display garbled or blank with power confirmed at the unit
- Random restarts mid-operation
- Buttons not responding
- Modulation not happening (burner stuck at one fire level despite setpoint changes)
- ControlR Wi-Fi module connected but app shows no data
Diagnose by elimination
PCB failure is the diagnosis of last resort. Work through the relevant error code's diagnostic sequence first. PCBs are robust and rarely fail before year 8-10. Unusual error code combinations are more often a wiring fault or sensor issue.
Replacement
Dealer-only. PCBs come pre-flashed with model-specific firmware. The installer:
- Removes the old PCB
- Installs the new pre-flashed PCB
- Transfers settings from the old PCB if it's still partially functional, otherwise re-enters from owner preferences
- Verifies sensor calibration
- Tests under load
- Updates firmware to latest version via service interface or ControlR app

Firmware updates
Rinnai pushes firmware updates through the ControlR app. Updates fix modulation glitches, improve Circ-Logic learning, and patch security issues in the Wi-Fi module. Always run latest firmware before assuming PCB hardware failure.
Warranty
5-year parts warranty on Sensei includes the PCB. Some PCB failures in years 6-10 are eligible for Rinnai goodwill replacement — call 1-800-621-9419 and ask. Outside warranty, the cost approaches 30-40% of new unit price.
