Rinnai is a contractor-channel brand that has gradually opened up retail. Five places to buy, with different tradeoffs:
1. Rinnai-trained installer (recommended)
The default and best channel. A Rinnai-trained installer:
- Has direct distributor access to all current models including Sensei RX and Demand Duo
- Receives extended labor warranty (3 years on some lines vs 1 year standard)
- Has Rinnai service software for diagnostics and firmware updates
- Can submit warranty claims directly
- Knows the install requirements (gas line sizing, venting, condensate) that DIY installs typically get wrong

2. Plumbing wholesalers
Ferguson, Hajoca, Winsupply, F.W. Webb. Carry full Rinnai catalog. Generally require a plumbing contractor account, but increasingly serve walk-in retail with markup. Good for homeowners who plan to install themselves but want OEM Rinnai units (not eBay refurbished).
3. Home Depot
Stocks Value Series (V65, V75, V94) and select RL models. Limited Sensei. Sensei RX is rarely in-stock; usually special-order. Installation through Home Depot's contractor network adds significant markup — typically more expensive than direct Rinnai-trained installer.
4. Lowe's
Similar product mix to Home Depot. Slightly stronger Sensei presence. Installation network varies by region.
5. Amazon
Stocks V-series and select RL/Sensei models from Rinnai America and authorized third-party sellers. Buy only from Rinnai America (the official seller) or top-rated sellers with explicit warranty inclusion. Off-brand Amazon listings of Rinnai units are often gray-market or refurbished; warranty may not apply.

Critical: install matters more than purchase channel
A $200 cheaper Rinnai from Amazon installed badly costs more than a $200-pricier Rinnai from a trained installer. The vast majority of "tankless was terrible" complaints trace to undersized gas line, improper venting, or skipped condensate plumbing — all install issues, not unit issues. See our install guide.
Bottom line
Buy through a Rinnai-trained installer if at all possible. If you must DIY, source through plumbing wholesaler or Amazon (official seller only), and budget for a paid commissioning visit by a Rinnai-trained installer to keep the warranty intact.
