Rinnai serial numbers encode the manufacture date in the first few characters. Useful when:

- Data plate on the left side or back panel of the unit

Decoding the serial
Rinnai uses a consistent format. Take a serial like 11A123456:
- First two digits = year of manufacture (11 = 2011, 22 = 2022). Note: the cycle is 10 years; a "12" could be 2012 or 2022 — context (model launch date, install paperwork) disambiguates
- Third character = month (A=Jan, B=Feb, C=Mar, D=Apr, E=May, F=Jun, G=Jul, H=Aug, J=Sep, K=Oct, L=Nov, M=Dec)
- Remaining digits = factory sequence number
So 11A123456 = January 2011 (or January, depending on the model — Sensei wasn't introduced until 2016, so a Sensei serial starting with "11" is 2021).
Cross-check against the model
Match the encoded year against the model's production years:
- Sensei (RU) — 2016 to present
- Sensei RX (RX) — 2020 to present
- Sensei+ (RUR) — 2018 to present
- Luxury Series (RL) — 2012 to present
- Value Series (V) — 2010 to present
- RUC condensing — 2010-2020 (predecessor of Sensei)
- RSC Super High Efficiency — 2010-2018 (predecessor of Sensei)
- R-series (R75LS, R85, R94LS) — 2003-2014 (predecessor of RL)
Warranty implications
Warranty runs from install date, not manufacture date — but manufacture date sets the upper bound. If the unit was manufactured 8 years ago and your purchase paperwork shows install last year, Rinnai will warranty from manufacture date (8 years used of the 15) unless registration was completed at install.
