Condensing water heaters extract additional heat from the flue gas before exhausting it — increasing UEF efficiency from typical 0.62–0.67 (atmospheric) up to 0.84–0.97 (condensing). The technology requires sealed-combustion 2-pipe PVC venting and a condensate drain (the recovered heat condenses water vapor from the flue gas, which must drain to a floor drain or condensate pump).

For typical 3–4 person households on natural gas:

Condensing install requirements
- 2-pipe PVC venting (intake + exhaust) — both terminate outside
- Condensate drain — recovered moisture from flue gas (~0.5–1 gallon/day for tanks, more for tankless)
- 120V outlet for the combustion fan
- Condensate neutralizer cartridge recommended — the condensate is mildly acidic (pH 3–5) and can damage cast-iron drain pipes over time
- Permit + licensed installer — sealed combustion is more complex than atmospheric
Condensing vs atmospheric — when to upgrade

Condensing technology is mainstream for residential gas tankless (the volume application) and growing for residential gas tanks. For long-horizon owners on natural gas, condensing tankless wins on lifetime cost in most scenarios. For shorter horizons or budget-tight installs, atmospheric remains the volume default. For all-electric, the equivalent efficiency category is heat pump water heaters (3.45+ UEF beats any condensing gas unit on raw efficiency, with $2,000 federal IRA credit closing the upfront gap).
