Navien NPE-210A Premium Condensing Tankless Water Heater (Legacy) Review

The Navien NPE-210A is Navien's mid-tier 180,000 BTU residential condensing tankless, positioned below the flagship NPE-240A in BTU output and target household size. Like the NPE-240A, it includes ComfortFlow (the built-in 0.5-gallon buffer plus integrated recirculation pump). The "210" reflects the 180K BTU input class with marketing rounding; the "A" identifies the original/Legacy generation, which has been superseded by the NPE-A2 series in current production.

Specs: 180,000 BTU input, UEF 0.93, up to 10.0 GPM at a 35°F rise or 4.9 GPM at a 70°F rise, full stainless steel dual heat exchanger. Same ComfortFlow buffer-and-recirc engineering as the larger NPE-240A, allowing similar cold-water-sandwich elimination and instant-hot-at-tap behavior.

The NPE-210A is right-sized for households with 2–3 bathrooms running typical demand patterns. The NPE-240A's additional capacity (10 GPM vs 8.8 GPM at 35°F rise) matters for 3+ bathroom homes or homes with overlapping high-demand use. For most 2-bath single-family homes, the NPE-210A delivers identical real-world performance at a slightly lower price point — about $1,500 unit versus $1,650 for the NPE-240A.

Right buyer: a 2-bath single-family home or smaller 3-bath home where the cold-water sandwich elimination and instant-hot recirculation are the primary buying motivations rather than absolute peak GPM. For larger homes, step up to the NPE-240A; for households not needing ComfortFlow, the lower-tier Rheem RTGH or non-recirc Rinnai RU180 are cheaper alternatives.

About $3,800 installed including PVC condensing venting and gas-line upsize typical of tankless retrofits. The NPE-A2 series (current production) supersedes this Legacy unit at slightly higher price; parts support for NPE-210A committed through 2032.
