Navien NPE-180A Premium Condensing Tankless Water Heater (Legacy)
Navien NPE-180A Premium Condensing Tankless Water Heater (Legacy) Review
The Navien NPE-180A is the mid-tier 150,000 BTU tankless in Navien's NPE-A "Legacy" line — sitting below the flagship NPE-240A and above the smaller NPE-150 in the residential range. Like other NPE-A models, it includes ComfortFlow (the built-in 0.5-gallon buffer + integrated recirculation pump). "A" identifies the original/Legacy generation that the NPE-A2 series has superseded in current production.
Specs: 150,000 BTU input, UEF 0.93, up to 8.0 GPM at a 35°F rise or 3.9 GPM at a 70°F rise, full stainless heat exchanger. Sized for 1-2 bathroom homes with overlapping demand (warm climates) or 2-3 bathroom homes with sequential demand (any climate).
The NPE-180A is positioned for buyers wanting Navien's engineering — particularly ComfortFlow for cold-water-sandwich elimination — at lower capacity than the 199K BTU NPE-240A. The smaller burner means smaller gas-line requirements (sometimes 1/2" gas line is sufficient) and slightly lower install cost. About $1,400 unit, $3,200 installed.
The NPE-A2 series (current production) supersedes this Legacy unit. Parts support for the NPE-180A is committed through 2032. Buying a Legacy unit today saves $100–$300 over the equivalent NPE-A2 with identical residential performance. Right buyer: cost-conscious tankless conversion in a smaller home where the ComfortFlow buffer matters.
