Solar water heaters use the sun to preheat domestic hot water, typically as a supplement to a conventional backup heater rather than as a sole-source system. The two solar water heater architectures

Solar vs heat pump for electrification
For households committed to electrification, the modern choice often shifts toward heat pump water heaters (Rheem ProTerra, AO Smith Voltex) instead of solar thermal. Heat pump pros: simpler install, no roof penetration, $2,000 IRA tax credit (vs 30% solar ITC — comparable but different mechanism), 3.45 UEF year-round vs solar's climate-dependent yield. Solar pros: maximum efficiency in sunny climates, no electrical-service-upgrade requirement, can pair with existing gas backup.
Install considerations
- Roof orientation: south-facing roof preferred; east/west acceptable; north-facing rules out solar
- Roof condition: 5+ years of remaining roof life; otherwise re-roof before solar install
- Shading: trees, neighboring structures, HVAC equipment can negate solar yield
- HOA approval: some HOAs restrict solar collectors — verify before signing a contract
- Permits: solar thermal install requires building, plumbing, and sometimes electrical permits
- Pro install required: solar thermal is not DIY — system design, glycol management, and freeze protection require certified solar installers
