The trip-lever handle on a TOTO is a chrome lever connected to a metal arm that lifts the flapper or canister inside the tank. Handles fail by chrome plating dulling, internal mechanism sticking, or the plastic mounting nut cracking. All are 5-minute fixes with a $15–$45 replacement.

TOTO handle types

  • Standard front-left chrome lever — the default Drake / Drake II / Vespin II / UltraMax handle. Lever points right when pressed. TOTO part: THU068.CP.
  • Front-right (left-hand mount) — accessibility-friendly variant for users with limited right-side dexterity. TOTO part: THU068L.CP.
  • Designer finishes (Polished Brass, Brushed Nickel, Polished Gold, Oil-Rubbed Bronze) — TOTO matched-finish handles for designer-bath specifications. ~$35–$55.
  • Push-button top mount (Carlyle II, some Aquia IV revisions) — button on top of tank lid; uses a different lift mechanism.
  • Dual-flush actuator (Aquia IV) — not a traditional handle; uses two buttons on top of the tank.

TOTO handle mounting pattern

Standard TOTO Drake-series tanks use a 1.5" diameter handle hole with a left-hand-threaded plastic mounting nut (counter-clockwise to tighten, clockwise to loosen — yes, this is intentional, to prevent flushing from un-tightening the handle). The mounting pattern is the universal US trip-lever pattern, meaning Danco / Korky / Lasco universal handles fit TOTO bowls with no modification.

What to buy

  • TOTO THU068.CP (genuine chrome trip lever) — $25. The volume TOTO handle. Polished chrome, fits Drake, Drake II, Vespin II, UltraMax II.
  • TOTO designer finish trip levers (THU068.PN/PG/ORB) — $35–$55. Polished Nickel, Polished Gold, Oil-Rubbed Bronze. For matched-finish bath suites.
  • Danco 89280 (universal chrome) — $10–$15. Fits TOTO Drake series. Adjustable arm length.
  • Korky 6021BP (chrome universal) — $12. Stainless steel arm, adjustable.
  • Plumb Craft 7028250 (chrome universal trip lever) — $9. Volume Home Depot choice.

The replacement procedure (5 minutes)

  1. Disconnect the chain from the existing trip-arm (inside the tank).
  2. Remove the plastic mounting nut from inside the tank — clockwise to loosen (reverse-threaded). This is the most-confused step.
  3. Pull the old handle out from the front of the tank.
  4. Insert the new handle through the tank's handle hole.
  5. From inside, screw the new mounting nut on counter-clockwise to tighten. Hand-tight + 1/4 turn — never overtighten on porcelain.
  6. Reattach the chain to the trip arm with 1/2" of slack.
  7. Test flush. Adjust chain length if the flush is weak.

Common TOTO handle failure modes

  • Chrome plating dulls. 5–10 years of cleaning-product exposure. Replace.
  • Handle becomes sticky / slow. Mineral buildup at the pivot. Clean with vinegar; lubricate with food-grade silicone grease. Often restores function.
  • Trip arm bends or breaks. Years of force or accidental impact. Replace whole assembly.
  • Plastic mounting nut cracks. Replace with $3 universal mounting nut from hardware store.

Adjusting chain length after handle replacement

  • Too short (tight chain): flapper won't seal — tank leaks.
  • Too long (loose chain): handle has to be pressed all the way down — weak flush.
  • Just right: ~1/2" slack in the chain when the flapper is in resting position.
