One-Piece Toilets: full buyer's guide
A one-piece toilet is a single porcelain casting — tank and bowl molded together with no seam between them. It's the cleaner-looking, easier-to-maintain alternative to the standard two-piece, but the install logistics and price-to-performance ratio matter when you decide.
The case for one-piece
- No bolt-down tank gasket to fail — the most common "tank-to-bowl leak" mode doesn't exist on a one-piece because there's no joint.
- Easier to clean — no seam, no bolt caps, no gasket grime. A wipe of the back of the bowl is faster than maneuvering a rag around tank bolts.
- Lower profile — most one-piece designs are noticeably shorter overall (24–27" tall vs 30–32" for a two-piece), which works in small bathrooms with windows behind the toilet.
- Look — the seamless silhouette is the design signature of premium one-pieces (Kohler Memoirs, TOTO Carlyle II, American Standard Boulevard).
The case for two-piece
- Easier to handle in install — a one-piece weighs 100–130 lbs as one unit. Most homeowners can't carry it up a staircase or maneuver it in a tight bathroom alone.
- Easier to replace one half — if the bowl cracks (rare) or the tank cracks (slightly less rare), you can replace just the affected half on a two-piece. One-piece means full replacement.
- Less expensive at equivalent flush performance — comparable Kohler Cimarron two-piece runs $250 vs Kohler Memoirs one-piece at $700. The bowl-and-trapway engineering is identical; you're paying for the silhouette.
- Better part availability — two-piece designs have been in production longer; flush valves, flappers, and tank parts are universally interchangeable. Some premium one-pieces use proprietary flush kits.
The five one-piece models worth considering
- Kohler Memoirs Stately — $750–$1,000. Tank-style one-piece with Kohler's AquaPiston flush. Comfort height standard.
- TOTO Carlyle II — $1,200. Tankless-style profile (very low silhouette), Double Cyclone flush, soft-close seat included.
- American Standard Boulevard — $600. FlowWise 1.28 GPF, EverClean glaze, slim modern silhouette.
- Swiss Madison Concorde — $300–$400. Wayfair / Amazon volume seller; dual-flush 0.8/1.28 GPF, soft-close seat included. Quality consistency varies.
- Woodbridge T-0019 / T-0001 — $300–$500. Skirted-trapway design, soft-close seat, includes a basic bidet integration on some configurations.
Install gotcha: floor flange height
Because a one-piece is heavier and the bowl-to-flange angle is fixed, an out-of-level floor or a too-high flange can crack the porcelain during install. Use a setting compound (not just the wax ring) to fill the gap and distribute load. If you're DIY-installing, have a second person at minimum — the unit is awkward to lower onto a wax ring without rocking. Pros use a dolly or a 2x4 lever to position.
