4-inch Flush Valve Toilets (Champion 4 et al.): full buyer's guide
A 4-inch flush valve is the largest flush valve sold in US residential toilets. The standard residential flush valve is 2-inch or 3-inch; 4-inch is the rare premium specification, found primarily on the American Standard Champion 4 line. The larger valve moves water from the tank to the bowl at much higher velocity than a 2"-3" valve, which means stronger flush performance at the same GPF.
Why 4-inch matters
Flush velocity = (tank water volume × valve diameter) / time. A bigger valve = more velocity per gallon of water. For a 1.28 GPF toilet:
- 2-inch flush valve: flow rate ~30 seconds per gallon
- 3-inch flush valve: flow rate ~15 seconds per gallon
- 4-inch flush valve: flow rate ~7 seconds per gallon
The 4-inch valve dumps the entire 1.28 gallons into the bowl in about 7 seconds, generating significantly more momentum than smaller valves. The result: noticeably stronger waste clearance, especially valuable for heavy-paper-use households or households with chronic clog issues.
Models with 4-inch flush valves
- American Standard Champion 4 ($330–$430) — the volume model. Two-piece elongated, 1.28 GPF or 1.6 GPF, EverClean glaze.
- American Standard Champion PRO ($380–$480) — Champion 4 with ActiClean automatic cleaning system.
- American Standard Champion Pressure-Assisted ($500–$620) — 4-inch + Flushmate pressure-assist for maximum flush power.
The trade-off — louder flush
A 4-inch flush valve dumps water faster, which means the flush is audibly louder than a 2-3 inch valve. Most owners don't find it disruptive — it's a healthy "whoosh" rather than a "rush" — but in apartments with thin walls or master baths adjacent to bedrooms, the noise difference is noticeable.
The 4-inch flapper
Because the flush valve is larger, the flapper that sits on it is also 4 inches in diameter. This is exclusive to Champion 4 — every other US residential toilet uses 2" or 3" flappers. Replacement parts:
- American Standard 7301111-0070A (OEM 4") — $14
- Korky 2022BP (universal 4") — $9
- Fluidmaster 504 (universal 4") — $11
