Dual-flush toilets — how they work

Dual-flush toilets have two flush buttons: one for solid waste (typically 1.28 GPF full flush) and one for liquid-only flush (typically 0.8 GPF half flush). The EPA calculates the effective average GPF based on a 1 solid : 2 liquid daily-use ratio, yielding effective 1.06 GPF for most dual-flush toilets — qualifying for WaterSense Most Efficient certification.

The water savings math

WaterSense Most Efficient utility rebates

Most US Sun Belt water utilities (CA, AZ, TX, NV, FL) offer tiered rebates that distinguish between standard WaterSense (1.28 GPF) and WaterSense Most Efficient (effective 1.06 GPF or lower). Dual-flush toilets qualify for the higher rebate tier:

The dual-flush half-flush limitation

The 0.8 GPF half-flush (or 0.5 GPF on Niagara Stealth) is designed for liquid-only flushes. Solid waste requires the full 1.28 GPF flush. Common owner mistake: trying to use half-flush for solid waste, resulting in incomplete bowl evacuation. Educate household members on the dual-flush button distinction.

Dual-flush cartridge service

Each brand uses a proprietary dual-flush cartridge that's NOT cross-compatible:

  • Eljer Aqua-Saver II: 091-7115 cartridge ($45-$60)
  • Vortens Cancun: VC-1280 cartridge ($25-$45)
  • Mansfield Smart 360: 155-CR cartridge ($45-$60)
  • Glacier Bay Power Flush: Glacier Bay-specific cartridge ($30-$40)
  • Niagara Stealth: Niagara-specific kit (Niagara customer service)

  • TOTO Aquia: TOTO-specific kit

Service life: typically 10-15 years before cartridge replacement needed.
