Basement Bathroom Toilets: full buyer's guide
A basement bathroom needs a toilet that works below the level of your main sewer line — meaning either a macerating toilet that pumps waste upward, or a traditional toilet paired with an ejector pump and pit. The decision between these two paths drives most basement-bathroom toilet choices.
Path 1: Macerating toilet (no slab break needed)
A macerating toilet (Saniflo is the dominant brand) grinds waste into a slurry and pumps it through a 3/4" PVC discharge line up to 15 vertical feet or 150 horizontal feet to the main soil stack. Install cost: $1,800–$3,300 total. No slab break required — the entire system installs above the existing basement floor.
- Sanicompact ($1,150) — integrated macerator + toilet combo
- Saniaccess 2 / Saniaccess 3 ($1,250–$1,450) — macerator pump only; pair with any standard toilet
- Sanibest Pro ($1,850) — heavy-duty grinder for guest house or light-commercial
Path 2: Ejector-pump system with traditional toilet
An ejector pump system uses a sealed concrete or fiberglass pit (24"–48" diameter, 18"–36" deep) buried below the basement floor. The toilet drains into the pit; a submerged pump fires when the pit fills, pushing waste up to the soil stack. Used when the basement allows a slab break + pit installation (typically existing-construction with concrete saw access). Install cost: $5,000–$15,000.
- Pit installation: $1,500–$4,000 in slab work
- Ejector pump: $300–$800 (Zoeller, Liberty, Hydromatic)
- Standard toilet: any residential model — Kohler Cimarron, TOTO Drake II, etc. Same install procedure as a regular bathroom.
- Pit cover and venting: $300–$600
- Plumber labor: $1,500–$4,000
Which path is right for your basement
- Choose macerating when: the basement is finished (slab work is intrusive), budget is the concern, the bathroom is occasional-use (guest), or the bathroom is a half-bath only
- Choose ejector-pump when: the basement has rough concrete (slab break is straightforward), bathroom will be heavily used (multiple users daily), full bathroom with shower needed (most macerators don't handle high-volume shower drains)
Other basement-bathroom considerations
- Backflow preventer required by code in most US jurisdictions to prevent sewer backup into the basement during heavy rain
- Venting — both macerator and ejector systems need atmospheric venting; tie into existing roof vent if possible
- Power supply — both systems need dedicated electrical (110V/15A for macerator, 110V/20A for ejector pump)
- Power outage backup — consider a battery backup for the ejector pump if your area has frequent outages
