Pelican NaturSoft Parts and Maintenance: Almost Zero Ongoing Cost

The NaturSoft's defining advantage over salt-based softeners is its near-zero maintenance cost during its rated service life. There are no consumables except media replacement at end of life, and the system has no moving parts, no control valve, and no electronics to fail. The total 5-year ownership cost for a NaturSoft 500 is typically under $200 in parts and maintenance — compared to $500–$1,500 for salt and filter changes on a comparable salt-based softener.

Pre-Filter Maintenance on Pelican Combo Systems (PC600/PC1000)

Pelican combo systems include a whole-home carbon filter that requires periodic media replacement. The carbon block media (catalytic carbon + KDF) should be replaced every 600,000 gallons or 5 years, whichever comes first. Pelican sells replacement carbon media through their website at approximately $200–$350 per tank. Annual inspection of the carbon tank outlet for any hardness breakthrough (test with a hardness test strip downstream) confirms media integrity.

Water Testing for NaturSoft Performance Verification

NaturSoft performance cannot be verified by a standard hardness test strip (hardness readings before and after the NaturSoft are identical — it does not remove minerals). Performance verification requires inspecting surfaces for scale: check the inside of your electric water heater element after 1 year. A properly functioning NaturSoft will show minimal white calcium deposits on the heating element surface. Before installation, photograph or inspect the element for comparison.
