Installation location selection
The pressure booster should be installed on the main cold water supply line immediately after the main shutoff valve and water meter. Installing after the water heater cold water supply takeoff ensures the booster serves all fixtures (hot and cold) -- installing before the heater takeoff only boosts cold water. The installation location must be accessible for annual service, protected from freezing (above 40 degrees F), and within reach of a dedicated electrical outlet.
Bypass piping
Install a bypass loop around the booster pump using two isolation ball valves and the bypass connection on the booster housing. The bypass allows the home to receive water at reduced pressure during booster service or pump failure. Without a bypass, the home has zero water supply when the pump is isolated for service. Most Rheem booster units include bypass connection ports -- the installer adds two ball valves and connecting pipe to complete the bypass loop.
Pressure tank connection
Rheem's RP17461 includes a small pressure tank (expansion tank) that buffers pressure spikes when the pump first activates. Connect the pressure tank to the booster unit per the included diagram. The pressure tank requires an air charge -- Rheem ships the tank pre-charged at the factory setting. Verify the air charge with a tire pressure gauge at the Schrader valve on the tank (no water running, system fully depressurized) -- the charge should be 2 PSI below the pump's cut-in pressure setting.
Pressure setpoint calibration
After installation, the target outlet pressure is set via the booster control panel or adjustment screw. Rheem default setpoint is 65 PSI. If the home's supply main is rated for lower pressure (check with the water utility or plumber), adjust the setpoint to 5 PSI below the rated pressure. Verify the setpoint with the pressure gauge at a hose bib -- run the shower, kitchen sink, and a toilet fill simultaneously and confirm the dynamic pressure stays within 10 PSI of the static setpoint. If pressure drops more than 10 PSI, the pump may be undersized for the home's demand.
