Electrical requirements -- IntelliPro VSF
The Pentair IntelliPro VSF requires a dedicated 240V, 20A circuit (30A for the 3 HP model). The circuit must include a local disconnect switch within sight of the pump per NEC 680. The IntelliPro includes a digital control panel on the pump motor housing where speed schedules are programmed -- no separate controller is required for standalone operation (the IntelliPro also integrates with Pentair IntelliCenter and EasyTouch automation systems if present). Hire a licensed electrician for the electrical installation if a new circuit is needed.
Plumbing connection
Most Pentair pump replacements retain the existing union connections on the equipment pad. Pentair equipment union sizes (2-inch union is standard) match across the WhisperFlo and IntelliPro wet ends -- the plumbing connections typically do not require modification when replacing one Pentair pump with another. If replacing a non-Pentair pump, adapters may be required. Shut off the pump, close the suction and return valves (or use the main pool drain), disconnect the union connections, unbolt the pump motor from the base, remove the old pump, and reverse the sequence for the new pump. Apply a fresh O-ring (included) at each union connection -- do not reuse old union O-rings.
IntelliPro speed schedule programming
The IntelliPro VSF control panel allows up to 8 speed and time schedule programs. Standard residential programming: Program 1: 1,200-1,800 RPM for 8-10 hours daily (filtration). Program 2: 2,800-3,450 RPM for 1-2 hours (vacuuming or cleaning). Program 3: 1,000-1,200 RPM for 2 hours at night (chemical distribution). Total daily run time is approximately 10-12 hours for most residential pools. The factory default programs are adequate for most installations -- adjust based on actual pool cleanliness and water chemistry stability. Prime and first-run check
Pool pumps are centrifugal and lose prime if the pump basket or suction line contains air. After installation: (1) Fill the pump strainer basket with water from a bucket. (2) Replace the strainer basket cover (hand-tighten). (3) Open suction and return valves. (4) Start the pump at low speed (1,200 RPM for IntelliPro) and observe the sight glass or clear strainer lid -- air bubbles should clear within 30-90 seconds. (5) If priming does not occur within 2 minutes, shut off the pump, refill the strainer basket, and restart. Failure to prime usually indicates an air leak in the suction line -- check all union connections and the strainer lid O-ring for proper seating.
