Variable speed pump energy savings -- the math

Pool pump energy consumption scales with the cube of motor speed. At half speed, a variable speed pump consumes one-eighth the energy of full-speed operation (0.5^3 = 0.125). Most pools require filtration for 6-8 hours per day at a flow rate substantially below the pump's full-speed maximum. A variable speed pump running at 30-40% of full speed for filtration consumes approximately 150-250 watts. A single-speed pump running at full speed uses 1,100-2,500 watts. At $0.15 per kWh average US electricity rate: a single-speed 1.5 HP pump running 8 hours costs $0.50-$1.00 per day. A variable speed pump for the same pool costs $0.08-$0.15 per day. Annual savings: $150-$310. IntelliPro payback at these savings: 2-4 years.

Pool sizing for pump selection

Pool turnover rate is the time required for the pump to circulate the total pool volume once through the filter. Standard recommendation: 8-hour turnover (full pool volume filtered once every 8 hours). For a 20,000-gallon pool at 8-hour turnover: required flow rate = 20,000 / 8 / 60 = 42 GPM. At 42 GPM against typical pool head pressure (30-40 feet of head including filter resistance), the Pentair WhisperFlo 1.5 HP operates near its efficiency peak. Total dynamic head -- why it matters

Pool pump selection requires a total dynamic head (TDH) calculation: sum of the vertical head (height difference between pool water surface and pump), friction head (from pipe diameter and length), and filter resistance. A pool with long pipe runs (20+ feet from pool to equipment pad), multiple water features, or an undersized filter adds significant head pressure that reduces pump flow rate. For complex pool systems with high TDH, a higher HP pump or a variable speed pump at higher speed settings is required. A pool contractor or Pentair dealer can calculate TDH from the actual pool system specifications.

State code requirements

California Title 20 mandates variable speed pumps (VS or VSF) for all residential pool pumps with 1 HP or greater rated output -- single-speed pumps are prohibited for new installations and replacements in pools over 20,000 gallons. New York has similar requirements. Colorado, Nevada, and Hawaii have adopted or are adopting comparable standards. Verify current code before purchasing a single-speed pump -- replacing a single-speed with another single-speed pump may not be code-compliant in your jurisdiction even for a direct like-for-like replacement.
