Pump Impeller and Wear Plate
The impeller is the highest-wear pump component, particularly in trash pump applications where abrasive particles pass through. Reduced flow rate with no change in head or hose conditions is the primary symptom of impeller wear. Kohler sells replacement impeller kits for all current pump head models; the kit typically includes the impeller, wear plate, and gasket. Impeller replacement requires removing the pump head from the engine PTO shaft (3 to 4 mounting bolts) and disassembling the volute. Refer to the pump model-specific service manual for torque specs on reassembly -- an impeller seated too tight can bind against the wear plate.
Mechanical Pump Seal
The mechanical seal between the pump head and the engine output shaft prevents process water from entering the engine. Seal failure presents as water dripping or spraying from the engine-pump junction during operation. Replace the seal at first sign of leakage -- water in engine oil causes rapid bearing damage. Kohler mechanical seals are ceramic-face units; installation requires the impeller to be removed first. Lubricate the rubber bellow with soapy water (not petroleum grease) during installation to prevent tearing.
Engine Air Filter: 25-Hour Service Interval
The paper element air filter for CH395 and CH440 engines requires cleaning every 25 operating hours and replacement every 100 hours or annually, whichever comes first. Pump operations near dirt, mud, or crop debris expose the filter to heavy dust loading -- inspect every 10 hours in these conditions. The filter for the CH395 is Kohler part 12 083 12-S (paper element) or 12 083 05-S (pre-cleaner foam). Tap the paper element gently on a flat surface to dislodge loose dust; never wash a paper element or blow compressed air through it from the inside out.
Spark Plug and Carburetor Service
Replace the spark plug every 100 hours or annually. Kohler CH395 uses Champion RC12YC or equivalent; gap to 0.030 inch. A fouled plug (black carbon deposit) indicates running rich -- adjust the carburetor high-speed mixture screw 1/8 turn lean and retest. Carburetor rebuild kits are available for both CH395 and CH440 and include the main jet, emulsion tube, float needle and seat, and all gaskets. Rebuild is appropriate when the pump starts hard, runs rough, or surges at full throttle and a fresh spark plug and clean air filter do not resolve the issue.
