Pre-Operation Checks: Oil, Fuel, and Engine
Check engine oil before every use. Kohler Command Series engines require SAE 10W-30 for ambient temperatures between 0 and 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Oil level must show on the dipstick between the ADD and FULL marks. Running with low oil triggers the Kohler low-oil protection system (LED warning on newer models) and can cause irreversible damage within minutes. Fill the fuel tank with fresh 87+ octane gasoline; do not use fuel with more than 10 percent ethanol (E10 is acceptable; E15 and above damage carburetor seals and fuel lines). Store fuel with a stabilizer if the pump will sit more than 30 days between uses.
Hose Sizing and Connection
Use suction hose rated for hose specifically -- not standard garden hose, which collapses under the vacuum created on the suction side. Kohler recommends reinforced PVC suction hose with a wire helix inside the wall to prevent collapse. For a 2-inch pump, use 2-inch inside diameter suction hose; reducing to 1.5-inch cuts flow by roughly 30 percent. Keep suction hose as short as practical -- every 10 feet of horizontal suction hose adds approximately 1 foot of head loss. Submerge the suction strainer at least 12 inches below the water surface to prevent air ingestion. Connect discharge hose to the pump outlet; standard camlock fittings on Kohler pumps accept agricultural and irrigation camlock adapters.
Priming the Pump
Before starting the engine, fill the pump body with water through the priming port on top of the pump housing. Kohler auto-prime centrifugal pumps have a self-priming mechanism (rotating impeller draws air out of the suction line while turning) but even self-priming pumps benefit from manual priming -- it reduces the time to full flow from 60 seconds to under 10 seconds and reduces wear on the pump seal during the dry-run priming phase. Fill until water pours back out the priming port, then replace the cap.
Starting and Operating
Close the choke (CHOKE position on lever) for cold starts. Set throttle to half speed. Pull the starter rope smoothly to full extension (avoid jerking just the handle). After the engine fires, gradually open the choke over 30 seconds as the engine warms. Advance throttle to full speed for maximum pump output. Full-speed operation is normal for Kohler pump sets -- the governor maintains a steady RPM regardless of load. For sustained operations over 4 hours, check fuel level every 2 hours (KP6200 tank holds approximately 0.8 gallons, good for 2 hours at full throttle). Exhaust must vent outdoors -- never operate in enclosed spaces.
