Delivery Pump Operation: Fill Cycle Mechanics
Brio bottom-load dispensers use a sealed 12V DC diaphragm pump to draw water from the jug through a probe assembly. The pump is not continuously running -- it activates when the reservoir float drops below the lower setpoint and deactivates when the float rises to the upper setpoint. A typical fill cycle draws 0.5 to 0.75 liters over 40 to 90 seconds depending on the jug water level and the tubing run length. The pump is intentionally quiet; the loudest component in a Brio dispenser during normal operation is the compressor starting and stopping to maintain cold temperature.
Understanding the Self-Cleaning UV Ozone Cycle
The Brio ozone generator uses a UV lamp to produce ozone gas that dissolves into the water circulating through the system. Ozone (O3) is a powerful oxidizing agent that kills bacteria and viruses on contact and breaks down to oxygen (O2) within hours, leaving no chemical residue. During the cleaning cycle: the UV lamp activates, ozone dissolves into the cold reservoir water, the delivery pump circulates ozone-charged water through the faucet lines for 20 minutes, then the pump runs fresh uncharged water through the entire circuit for the final 15 minutes to flush residual ozone. The complete cycle runs automatically every 24 hours.
When Manual Sanitization Is Still Necessary
The ozone cycle sanitizes the water path -- tank, faucet lines, and probe tube. It does not reach the exterior of the probe where the probe contacts the bottle cap, the interior of the bottle door compartment, or the drip tray. Manual cleaning of these surfaces with a mild bleach solution or white vinegar is recommended every 3 months. The interior of the hot water tank also benefits from a manual bleach sanitization annually -- ozone does not reach the hot circuit in most Brio models because it degrades rapidly at high temperatures.
Diagnosing Flow Issues
Slow cold flow: check that the reservoir float is not stuck in the up position (preventing pump activation). Open the top panel and manually depress the float -- if the pump activates and flow returns to normal, the float is sticking. Clean the float stem with a damp cloth. No flow at all: verify the jug is properly seated and the probe is inserted fully. Listen for the pump motor during the fill cycle -- if you hear nothing, test the control board relay by pressing the CLEAN button (which forces a pump activation). If the pump still does not run, measure 12V DC at the pump connector with a multimeter to confirm power is reaching the motor.
