Bradford White Water Heater Error Codes — Diagnostic Reference

Complete reference for Bradford White ICON System gas tank fault codes and Infiniti GR Condensing Tankless error codes.

Updated May 2026 · Bradford White Water Heaters

Bradford White uses two main error-code systems: the ICON System diagnostic LED on gas tank units, and the Infiniti GR Condensing Tankless two-digit display codes. This page covers both.

ICON System diagnostic LED codes

The ICON System on M2I-prefix gas tanks displays fault codes via a single LED that flashes in patterns. Count the flashes between pauses:

Flash countMeaningFix
1 flash (steady)Normal operation
2 flashesPilot won't lightClean intake filter (see our guide); then check thermocouple
3 flashesThermocouple failureReplace thermocouple ($25-$40 DIY)
4 flashesGas valve over-tempManual reset on gas valve; if recurs, replace gas valve
5 flashesHigh limit shutdownTank over-temperature event — check thermostat setting and gas valve
6 flashesGas valve internal faultReplace gas valve (warranty-covered)
7 flashesCombustion air blockedClean intake filter — this is the most common ICON code
8 flashesFlammable vapor sensor trippedFVIR safety — identify and remove flammable source (paint thinner, gasoline)

Infiniti GR Condensing Tankless error codes

11No ignitionVerify gas supply
12Flame failureClean intake filter; check vent termination
14High-temp shutoff (heat exchanger scale)Descale immediately; recurring = HX damage warranty claim
15Thermistor faultReplace temperature sensor
71Gas solenoid faultWarranty-covered; call BW
90Combustion abnormalVent blockage or insufficient combustion air

When to call a pro

DIY-friendly: codes 2/3/7 (intake filter + thermocouple), code 14 (descaling). Service tech: code 6 (gas valve), code 71 (gas solenoid).

Bottom line

For ICON System units, count the LED flashes carefully — 7 flashes is the most common and 60% of the time means intake filter. For full troubleshooting see our troubleshooting hub.
